| | I assembled a little playlist for Dad. Actually, it’s pretty long, and I had to use
some restraint. My dad loves music. He likes having lots of different kinds of
music. It’s one of the things we have in
common. I remember the stacks of vinyl
records, and cassette tapes, and the reel-to-reel machine that used to occupy
my parents’ bedroom. Having a lot of
music used to require a lot of space and a lot of time. A few minutes ago, I scrolled through a list
of 2000+ songs and pulled out 32 that reminded of Dad. The list includes some Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd,
Keith Green, and Allison Krauss.

In addition to music appreciation, my dad shared some cool
moments with me. When I was really young
(I think in the four to eight years range), my dad would take me with him to
the lumber yard/hardware store. Before
we went in, we would always stop at the pop machine and get either a Mountain
Dew or a Dr. Pepper, depending on our mood. We would share it as we walked up and down the
aisles, looking for whatever it was we had come to buy.
When I got into middle school, he would take me to breakfast
once a week before school. As I ate my French
toast and drank my hot chocolate, we could talk about whatever we wanted to. I didn’t mind getting up early. I loved going to breakfast with my dad.
Now, because our jobs are so similar (he’s a pastor), we get
to share a lot. . . books, ideas, plans. . . and of course music. |
