First off, this is a SPOLIER-RIFFIC REVIEW TYPE THINGY. Do not read if you don't want the twists ruined for you.
***** Ok. I don't like to be scared when I'm watching a movie. I can't handle the suspense. So I rarely watch horror movies. I've watched Alien, Night of the Living Dead, The Uninvited, The Watcher in the Woods, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1966), the first half of The Shining, Dracula (1931), Jaws, Shaun of the Dead, and Scary Movie. And those last two are really comedies. And Dracula, Body Snatchers, Night and Jaws didn't scare me that much... Unbreakable scared me more. And Watcher in the Woods got stupid as it went on.
Ok. Anyways. I am a huge, huge scaredy cat. I stopped reading The Hardy Boys series of books because I was becoming afraid of shadows at night. I scream very easily. And I am easily startled. At any rate, in summary, before tonight, I had only watched a total of three movies that had really scared me. Alien, part of the Shining, and The Uninvited. And since I haven't counted The Shining on my movie list... Out of 955 movies, only 2 had scared me. I really, really avoid horror movies.
So I went to the library yesterday. And guess what they have? When A Stranger Calls on dvd. I says to myself, it's only PG-13. And it's got the little girl from Jurassic Park 2. Only now she's older. Plus, I did want to movie was appealing. Didn't seem that gory. The original movie (I think from 1978 or 79) had freaked out my mother. Just mentioning the original movie makes her agitated. So. I knew some stuff about the original. Like "The calls are coming from inside the house!" and *SPOILER* that the kiddies died. *end spoiler*
So. I checked out the movie. I also, due to reading a review or to, knew going in that the kiddies were going to survive in the remake. But oh well. I don't if I could have made it through the movie if I didn't know that.
At any rate, I found the movie to be insanely nerve-racking. Even when it was super cliche, like not having the car start, or the cat doing stuff, I still found it creepy. Ok, not so much the cat stuff. But man. I freaked out, like when Jill was running, I had the volume on zero, and had my head nearly covered under the dog's blanket. Or when the freaking idiot got out of the freaking car! How stupid can you be! Gosh. I still found the car stuff intense.
I even prayed for the movie characters, despite knowing that they would make it out ok. Oh, and I kind of cussed a lot. A steady stream under my breath at times. On a positive note, there was very little cussing in the movie, which is a plus. I cussed way more than the movie characters did. Which was completely wrong for me to do. I think. I'm not really sure. And there was no gore. Yay!. But ugh. They left the initial murders to the imagination. Which is much more scary. I have a vivid imagination. *shiver* But really, the movie is rather clean.
I am so adrenaline high right now. I just watched possibly the most nerve racking movie I've ever seen, by myself, at night. And I have big windows. *whimper* Gosh.
Ok. So. If you watch a lot of horror movies, I really have no clue if When A Stranger Calls will scare you. It is really cliche horror. And I've researched horror cliches. Multiple times. So. I don't know.
I found When A Stranger Calls really scary because... #1) I buy/get into movie story's very easily. I find it easy to suspend disbelief with movies. #2) I can't stand suspense. #3) I have watched very few scary movies in my life. So I can't compare it to much. Its scares aren't derivative to me from other movies. #4) I'm a bit paranoid. So I often expect the worse. And darkness is scary.
At any rate. I consider that the main point of horror movies is to scare you. I was scared. Therefore, When A Stranger Calls gets a high rating. At least a B+, maybe an A-. Well, it's ending was so-so, and it was a bit illogical and cliche at times. But the atmosphere! The atmosphere! Eh, B+. Which is still like great. Unlike the atrocious 4.4/10 from IMDB. Wow. I'm exhausted, but slightly afraid to go to bed. I am so not watching horror movies any time soon. Especially not at night. At any rate, I really liked When A Stranger Calls.
And if I remember, next time I will blog about my fantabulous Pirates/Star Wars/Really Weird dream. Featuring Taun-tauns, Davy Jones, boxes of cereal, and underwater banking. Maybe.
Tra-la-la-la-la.
