CGR is down, predictably. Art and I get back from his weekend, and of course I can't get my CGR fix. Figures.
So. Another fun "weekend" at the in-laws', and another day of recovery afterward. I actually remembered to bring my swimsuit and so I went swimming with my bro-in-law, his girlfriend, and my nieces and nephews. I still need to go somewhere and do dives to get that craving out of me, but I had a lot of fun back-kicking (my stroke kind of sucks, and the pool's not that big) and trying to touch bottom at the middle of the pool. I'm just barely taller than it is deep, which isn't a pleasant discovery in relation to my lack of height. Ah well.
I am incredibly disappointed in Mae's new record. It releases on Tuesday, but you can stream it from their
Myspace now. I had high hopes for them after they got signed to a new label, but now they sound so generic. What happened to the lovely guitar riffs and incredible piano solos? Now it all blends into each other like banana blends into a smoothie: it overpowers and takes on the the one predominant flavor. In Mae's case, that flavor is fast approaching homogenized radio sound.
I think another reason I have such gripes over the disc is that I am not incredibly fond of synthy keyboard sounds. A number of the songs are rife with them. I don't understand why they would use synth sounds when a good guitar or keyboard solo could fill the position just as easily and sound arguably better. I always enjoyed the keyboarding on
We're So Far Away, and wondered often why similar piano lines weren't incorporated into more of their songs. I also don't understand why they've backed away from using catchy guitar solos a la
Anything or
Suspension. Why take away a good thing when it's working for you?
CGR needs to hurry up and get back up, before I start deciding I need to kick some more Zerg ass. [/starcraft]
