Summertime hints

Warm Weather Theme: Watch the Sun!

  • Always wear at least SPF 15 sunscreen when you're outdoors. Not only can sunburn dry the skin or cause blistering, sunburn can make your blood sugar behave erratically as well.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect the delicate skin on your face, and your eyes, from the sun's harsh rays.
  • Moisturize after swimming or showering, because soaps and chlorine are tough on your skin.
  • Drink lots of water, especially when you're active. Sweating takes liquid out of your body, so you have to put it back in.
  • Use talcum powder to keep your feet and areas between folds of skin dry.

Accu Chek sends all kinds of hints. One I learned from my dermatologist some time ago, do not use talc in the groin area, or under pendulous breasts. Unless it has no corn starch in it. Corn starch feeds fungus and most heat rashes are fungus!

Use an anti persperant (sp?spell check doesn't know either) in those areas. Not if it is broken out of course.

  • With diabetes I find those areas hard as heck to keep rash free. I don't know why I say a rash because it is a matter of the skin splitting open and at times very itchy, other times it hurts like heck! As we age the skin gets thin so 'scrubbing' is out of the question.

I also don't rub a towel after a shower, I pat dry, or on my legs 'drip dry'.

It is now time for me to start the sunscreen business on my nose where the basal cell cancer was. Should of done it all winter when the sun was out, but I slipped out of the habit.

Today I am going to try the pool I have missed all week. Now to remember to start out jogging and stretching before my method of swimming.

And sometimes the medication one is using makes a person susceptible to sun damage.

I remember now why I don't use talc,  I have more skin folds than I care to itemize.
