Bird with attitude

For those not familiar with Texas blackbirds that is a grackle. They have the pushiest attitude but the pigeons in my yard will run them off.

This flamingo cracked me up yesterday. He wasn't giving the grackle an inch. Then again maybe they were having a friendly encounter, I don't know.

We were out at Sea World of TX yesterday while thousands were downtown at the Battle of Flowers parade. Sky was cloudy, it was windy so 82 degrees was comfortable for the most part. Not sure what the humidity was.

3:15 a.m. this morning the storm moved in, the cats went into hiding, I opened the window and listened to the rain come down and inhaled the fresh smell. I wasn't sleeping well up to that point.

I love the smell of rain, of mown grass, of baking bread, of fresh perked coffee, and even as a habitant of PA and KS and S.Dak, Maine, the smell and quiet of softly falling snow.

I miss the smell of lilacs, lily of the valley and peony flowers. Yesterday with the masses of petunias planted at Sea World one place I could smell their sweet scent. I think it was the white ones no less.

Usually at home when my Easter lilies off the patio bloom I catch their scent. Not this year though. ??

Along with sight I guess scent is one of my senses most thankful for. Our friend lost his after his auto accident. He also lost his taste buds. Meals must be really bland for him, though he doesn't seem to have lost weight.

You can always find some of my photo's at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonnieb/

If you don't mind registering others are at: http://www.kodakgallery.com/MyKodak.jsp?think you can get there by that link.

Best get busy cleaning off my hard drive of some of the photo's.

Just figured out how to get my pictures into the xanga photo blog but have no idea how to find or link others to the durn thing. Kids would have a hoot at that. Don't go to xanga facts for the answer either.

You are smart to go to Sea World when the crowds are someplace else.    I do love to watch critters of any sort.   I don't even mind the grackles in our yard.   Their feathers catch the sun's rays and  so they're beautiful in their own way.  I get a laugh out of the males when they posture and croak to impress the females, who usually ignore them.

Well, you have figured out more than I have about the photo blog. Haven't had time to even try!!

I love the same smells that you do.  I discovered that rain smells different here than in Arizona.  There is such a different smell when the rain hits the desert than when it hits all the grass here.  Think it is the settling of the dust out there that makes it smell different----it is a much stronger smell, too.  But I love it.

It is true that we have the peonies, lilies of the valley and lilacs here, but you can grow things year around.  Here, everything is a drab shade of brown and gray all winter!  Ugh.  I see so many things I would love to grow, but we are too far north.

We have grackles here, too. They throw the bird seed from the feeders all over the ground. I'm glad you got your rain, but home it wasn't bad storms like other parts of Texas. The pie in your header looks real!!!!

We had a bit of rain here too,   and are grateful for it.    This is,  or was,  arid country, almost desert except for along the streams until man began to plant lawns and shrubbery.   It will return to its natural state, I fear,  if the drought lasts too long.

I love the smells of things too.  Rain does smell different in various sections of our vast nation.  We are still needing more rain and hopefully the fronts that started coming through this week will continue off and on for the coming weeks.  We are so far behind.

I don't know if "classic" xangans can use the photo blog.  I figure I will stick with what I know how to use, for now!

The grackles are pretty pestiferous around here.
