Found Poem on Flood '08
we were getting ready
for the end of the world
a terrible rain storm,
water from the rampaging Iroquois River
rose above the top arches
of the Sugar
Island Bridge
our small one story frame house
remains in the grip
of stagnant flood water, a toxic deluge
the mayor declined to speculate
on death, injury or arrest
the worst of the flooding
public safety huddled last night to forge a plan
receding Watseka flood waters
headed towards Kankakee
while some gapers were clogging the road
ogling the damage we will have
the distance between them and us fascinates me |
