Alan Greenspan, Tenor Sax Man
Would you believe me if I told you Alan Greenspan played tenor sax in a jazz band before becoming "first chair" at the Fed? Now, would you believe me if I told you I heard it on NPR? Greenspan played tenor sax with the Henry Jerome Orchestra, did the band's bookkeeping, and would do the band members' taxes for just $7. Before joining the band, he studied at Juilliard, and was proficient on clarinet, sax, and flute. He mainly played tenor with the Jerome Orch, but was occasionally called upon to demonstrate his clarinet and flute skills as well. According to the bandleader, he was not a good improviser, but a great section man (which is why he got the job). Proof that truth sometimes is stranger than fiction . . . |
