One of my friends recently did a weblog post comprised entirely of haikus. It inspired me to make an attempt at the same:

Stop killing the duck!
Call Humane Society!
No, just me on sax

(It'll be a while before I can say that I actually double . . . Unfortunately, most bands won't take on someone who only plays clarinet.)

Eight days 'till Christmas
Amazon.com wish list
Gives family hints

(Translation: More CD reviews coming soon!)

The polka from hell
Or, "Armenian Dances."
I want jazz music!

(Ever had to play the clarinet part to "Armenian Dances?" Basically, at the end, going faster than humanly possibly is not going fast enough.)

Now you clearly see
Why I do not write poems
Paragraphs are good

Well, that was fun! Hopefully I'll never be inclined to do such again, for my sake as well as the sake of my readers . . .

I think those are fun! Haikus are rather hard to write. I was always god at writing Beat poetry since you need to swing between the absolute and the abstract ... and some times both in the same line.

The other day I saw a lamp someone had made from an old clarinet.

I have an alto sax, myself. Not that you'd want to hear me play it ... but I do play a pretty good version of Boulevard of Broken Dreams!

Who knows . . . maybe fun poems will appear again from time to time . . .

Anyway, I saw a clarinet lamp once on eBay . . . It was made from a Pete Fountain clarinet (plastic student model, of course!) with a lampshade that had a caricature of Fountain on it.

Who knows . . . you still may sound better on sax than I do! I can play two notes at once on it, but not intentionally. Mainly, I need to loosen up my embouchure and open up my voicing. I'm still too much in "clarinet mode" when I play sax.

The clarinet lamp I saw was made from an old instrument ... and probably quite a good one, too.

I need to get the corks and pads re-done on my sax.

My new (well, new to me, at least) clarinet had to be re-corked and padded as soon as I got it, so I went for the full overhaul and had the keys polished, too. It looks pretty good for being 38 years old! It's a 1964 Selmer Series 9 complete with the original zippered case.

Did you know . . . Goodman played a Series 9 in the '60's! I actually found that out after I got it; I got the Series 9 because it pretty well fit for what I wanted in a clarinet - a nice jazz clarinet that wouldn't sound out of place in a legit setting, either.

What type of sax do you have?

Sounds like you've got a pretty swellegant clarinet there, Benni!

My sax is a Bundy ... and at the moment that's all I can tell you about it since its buried under a huge stack of books.

Hopefully it's in its case under all those books . . .

I've been toying with the idea of getting myself a sax, but first I want a new mouthpiece for my clarinet.

P.S. I just sent "Surfin' Snoopy" to you . . . The attachment is small, so even if you have a file size limit or something, it should still get there.

Oh yes, the sax is safe within a case! Its buried underneath a big stack of Dover books on Victorian and early 20th Century architecture.

Are you thinking of getting an alto or tenor (or soprano or baritone) sax? If I had it to do over again, I'd get a tenor sax.

Thanks for Surfin' Snoopy! Very cool! :D

Glad you liked the song!

I'm thinking of getting an alto because I sound even worse on tenor than I do on alto . . . Once I'm decent on alto, then I can start thinking about getting within a five foot radius of a tenor again. I'd probably have no trouble on soprano, but I'm really looking to double on an instrument that will make me look like a more appealing and versatile player to a jazz band. If I could have (and sucessfully play) any sax I wanted, I'd go for a bass! But the day I find a bass sax is the day I find a time machine to go back in time and get lessons on it from Adrian Rollini . . . hehe

A bass sax ... wow! A friend of mine had a bass sax and I tried that out but I could only manage the top two keys and and I mostly made a horrible cow-like noise. Talk about embouchure!
