"On every question of construction, carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed."Thomas Jefferson to Supreme Court Justice William Johnson, June 12, 1823

Well, here are the pics of the jury-rigged beavertail grip safety.  Like I said, it needs to be sanded a little and reparked.  It is aluminum, so I can't use cold blue, but it also isn't going to rust in the white.  I'll get it reparked later this break.  And the hammer is a temporary Colt Commander hammer I used to test the fit.

Like I said, it doesn't look great, but it seems to work.  It obviously won't be loaded until after I can test it at the range.  In order to preserve the frame in standard GI configuration, I may end up not reparking this grip safety.  When I buy some new internals, I'll likely buy a drop-in grip safety.  That is what I thought I had bought this time around.  Live and learn.
