"On every question of construction, carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed."Thomas Jefferson to Supreme Court Justice William Johnson, June 12, 1823

I have a pet peeve that's been bothering me a lot lately.  I am sick and tired of people rooting for schools they either did not go to or never could have academically qualified for.  It's super annoying.

For example, I just read a message sent by a db who roots for Duke.  He did not go there.  He couldn't have because he didn't try hard enough.  I am a Gator.  I worked to get there and graduate form there.  There's a degree on my wall.

I recognize there are exceptions for those who did not have the opportunity to go to college for financial reasons or those who root for their parents' school AS WELL AS their own school.  However, if you've actually been to college and it wasn't the school you want to root for and yet you still root for that unatainable school, that's just tacky and pathetic.

Go Gators.

don't root for the Jags - you don't play for them because you didn't try hard enough. People root for college teams for many reasons, I root for the Sooners because they have in the past played some very good football. I know people who root for Duke because they like good basketball, and duke plays some good basketball. I understand your loyalty to your school, but you can't fault people for what they like. I am one who thinks it is completely ok to like a team because it is good or just because they strike your fancy.

I agree that UNC clothing at UF is tacky, and the Jags reference was just a dig. But people don't need to go to a school to be a fan of that school's teams. I can completely identify with someone who likes Duke because they play some awesome basketball. I personally could care less about college basketball or Duke, but I can see the appeal. If a college degree was required from a school to root for their teams or attend their sporting events, college sports would have fallen along the wayside long long ago.
