  • I wonder......

When abortion was illegal, the exceptions to that were rape and incest. So, abortion could be carried out in the event of rape, incest, and oh yes, when it threatened the life of the mother.

    I wonder......

Did God make exceptions, then, for those mitigating circumstances? If it was murder just because a young pregnant woman was unwed, was it not murder under those circumstances?

EDIT: I want to be perfectly clear about one thing: I am neither condoning nor condemning abortion. I am asking how we can sympathize with a young woman who has an abortion due to rape or incest then turn around and accuse a young unwed mother with nowhere to turn, of murder. Isn't it God's place alone to judge whether the mitigating circumstances make it heinous or not? Make it murder or not? His place alone to judge?

It goes to show you that ANY behavior can be rationalized, right?

I think tomorrow's topic for me might be the "I can do whatever I want" thing.

Good point... How sad that Laci and Connor Peterson are murdered and a law is brought about so the babies murdered along with their mothers are considered people, but a woman can get her money out and pay to kill her own baby and it's okay. I can't imagine choosing that, even if I was raped or something heinous like that.... no matter how you get pregnant, it is not the baby's fault for your choices or things God has allowed in your life.

Sorry... I work with babies and can't fathom someone killing any of them. What a crying shame that this is where our society is.

I think there is an exception when it comes to the life of the mother.  But I would want a second opinion first.

You make a good point there.

History doesn't speak well of conventional religious responses to these issues.

But on the matter of exceptions, exceptions have always been made for the ending of life. For example, "murder" is bad yet "killing" is accepted and sometimes heavily supported by advocates of war and the death penalty.

Does God make exceptions? Possibly. Do we? Absolutely.

Where there is incest or rape, the pregnancy is because of a forced act, the church allows it for those circumstances, which are not natural.  I don't believe that it is allowed by the church to save the mother, but I could be wrong on that.  Most ladies have abortions after having consensual intercourse and just don't want the child.  However, as you said,  God is the final judge, we must pray for the right thing to be done, but not judge in any case.  God bless.  +

I think the difference (if there is one, I believe a child is a gift from God no matter what the circumstances)  would be that an unwed mother (and some of those committing incest) go into sex with the realization of what they're doing and therefore should cowboy up and face the results of their bad decisions.  Abortion has not become about saftey or protection of a mother, it has become about "this baby is an inconvienience.  I could (to a point) understand an abortion in the case of the life of the mother is at stake, or in the case of a rape victim, but there is no excuse for a murder or convienience.   There is most assuredly forgiveness...no doubt in my mind.  And I would never think myself worthy of condemning someone who God Himself has forgiven.  But for the sin itself, there is no excuse.

It is never our place to judge people if you are meaning that by saying 'you are condemned because you did this" by no means!  As Christians, we are to love that person--because we too have sinned and God was merciful to forgive us--when we agreed with him that we were sinners.  God does not say to the woman who has an abortion--that's okay, go ahead, I know what you're up against...no..he wants her to 1. not sin in the first place so she doesn't get to this point (if it was sex outside of marriage) and 2. He loves her and wants her to trust in him--so if she finds herself in this place regardless how....and trusts in Jesus Christ as her Lord she can then trust him to provide for her and that child and to lean on him for all provision-material, spiritual, and (our sin or the sin of others) God wants the opportunity to show us what he can do in our lives--for our good and for his glory. <3

Question: Mom has been increased to 20 units of Lantus per day.  How high is that on average?

  • gothabilly

God allows exceptions.  He has then written into the Levitical Code -- if you murder someone, and can make it to one of ten safe cities, then the Jewish law enforcement can't touch you.  And apparently, he allows for war and capital punishment, which are in clear violation of his own law, "Thou shalt not kill" and Jesus command to love your enemies and forgive all.

We are the ones who take exceptions to extremes.  But maybe extremes are called for sometimes.  In situations like this, all I know is if I had a dauther, and she were raped, I would not want her to go through the agony of nine months carrying the seed of her attacker, then have to look at the face of her attacker when the baby is born.  Even putting the baby up for adoption doesn't seem to be enough.  The baby would never enter my mind, only the psychological well-being of my daughter.  Would that make me a murderer?  Possibly, but I can live with that.  I've learned to live with a lot.

RYC:  I think in a case like this that balance and mercy are the orders of the day.  In abortion, homosexuality, war, and anything else that qualifies as a "big sin" people divide into two mutually exclusive camps -- those who love it and think everyone ought to be doing it, and those who hate it and think anyone who does it or has done it is damned to hell.  In between, you have God who is kinda alone, saying "I'd rather have mercy than sacrifice, guys."  It would be a lot better if we Christians stopped standing at the entrance door of the abortion clinic with signs, yelling at the poor girls.  They're already scared and helpless and feeling like sluts.  It would be better if we stood at the exit door with blankets, hot coffee and hugs for those girls and told them that God loved them anyway, and started them on the road toward rehab.  I know for a fact that those girls are emotionally messed up for years.  Does anyone ever take flowers to the receptionist in an abortion clinic?  I'd like to one day, in full clerical regalia, just to apologize to her for the way my colleagues treat her.  Only an act like that will melt her heart toward Christ.

    Hey,

My computer wasn't working, I dropped my laptop.  Plus I didn't feel like coming around anyways.  Hard week or two, but I'm still here and I'm fine.  Sorry I haven't talked to you a while.  I'll write you an email soon.  Thanks for caring.

It's no one's right to judge but what people don't seem to understand is that it is impossible for them to stand in another's shoes.  If they could just stand and walk around in the life or merely try on the shoes of another, maybe they could understand........................sometimes bad choices are made because the decision has been taken from them.  Sometimes it no longer is the choice of the one who is pregnant to begin with.

People don't understand  they can spout off all they want but until they stand in the shoes of another, such as one walking his way down his last few steps to the chair or lethal injection when he's innocent, or even when he's guilty.  It's the same thing.  What right do we have to take that life either? Or assist in a suicide,  You cannot possibly make an intelligent decision unless you stand in the shoes of one who has been there.  God is the only judge.  I am only a human being. We all make mistakes.  WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES.  Let you who are without sin cast the first stone!

I read what you wrote on Deacon Tom's site.  Much respect and admiration.

Maybe gothabilly's idea could be slightly altered...what if we Christians stood at the entrance door with blankets, hot coffee and hugs for those girls and told them that God loves them no matter what sins they will inevitably commit. We could start them on the road toward LIVING. Explain to them what GRACE is and why we ALL need it, not just aborting mothers.

For a long time, I felt like I was the world's only Christian democrat. I've paid for it already, through some churches. I've just always felt that confronting ANYONE with just a list of rules and "don'ts" will bring nothing but division among His people. (His people: people who Claim Christ as thier savior AND people who don't). This is one of the many battles, in my opinion, that is to be fought in the hearts of people, not in the laws of the land.

How can we (Christians) pass laws against something and not take it as an ego-boost that its a sin we, personally don't have? I feel like Christians who want to pass laws against abortion, homosextuality, etc want to do so because such laws would leave them in the majority...outstide the law.

I say, if Christians want to make the Bible law, go all the way! Divorce...ILLEGAL, adultery...ILLEGAL, debt...ILLEGAL, not belonging to a church...ILLEGAL. How ridiculous must it get before Christians realize that the entire country CHOOSES not to live by the bible. And so do we. Let's work on our own planks in our eyes, and stop picking on other people.

Here's a thought...WE COULD EVEN STAND UP FOR OTHER PEOPLE!

ok, climbing off my soap box, now...
