  • Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you that I am not lik other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the tax collector, standing far off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Rend your hearts, and not your garments.

Amen.  All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  No exceptions.  God looks on the heart, not our clothes. And we need a "reality check" on the condition of our hearts.  Thanks for the reminder! And thanks be to God for his love, forgiveness, and gift of salvation.  God bless your day.  Gerrie

If we would rend our hearts, what would fall out?  What ever our heart is full of.

What better picture exists to contrast religion and grace? One man puts his faith in his religion, the other depends completely on the mercy of God.

Imagine how shocking this story would be if told using modern-day terminology. ..not a message many in power would want to hear.

I need to be more humble.
    We both need more faith.

    Thank you for the reminder.

RYC:  It was EXTREMELY offensive.  It was an advertisement for the iBuzz.  Google that and see what you get!

RYC:  I went to an Episcopalian kindergarten and have always been fond of them.  I watched the Catholic channel last night.  That was some good preaching!  Wow!  Most sound theological sermons I've heard in four years.  And not a give to get moment in sight!

RYC:  Don't get me started on RHEMA!  At least KCM isn't legalistic, dogmatically foolish, but not legalistic.  Female RHEMA students have to wear panty hose under pants suits and men have to wear suits because they have to be prepared to go to the ministry field at any moment.  So, you're going to go to farmers dressed in a suit?????  Puh-leeeze!  And Ken Jr. walked out on stage wearing his father's shoes and said "see these shoes?  They're my Dad's.  So, I am well able to fill my father's shoes."  Sheer gall and arrogance!

    Okay.

Yeah, these two priests rocked.  The first was an uberanimated guy named Father Pablo who dissected the Our Father, and really looked at forgiveness.  The second was a priest who preached one of the best holiness messages I've ever heard and used the name JESUS over and over.  He looked like Captain Picard. I didn't totally agree with him, but it was so refreshing to hear a message on repentance and holiness that did not include anything about having to live in a mansion to please God.

You're right.  These guys are so in love with Jesus it's almost sickening!  I loved it.

Oh, when I am asked to pray publically, for some innate reason, I usually pray along Anglican lines.  It just comes out.  I do like how the Anglicans split the difference between the Catholic/Orthodox on one side and the Protestant/Reformed on the other.  It's a delicate balance but they seem to get the job done.  And they have an active charismatic branch.

I heard a story that this passage was taught in a Sunday School class for children.  The teacher asked that one of the children pray at the end.  The child prayed "Lord, we are so thankful that we are not like the Pharisee."

Thank you for the reminder.  We often try to view ourselves as separate from others.

So, thanks for posting that story this morning! I needed a reminder to stay humble. I need to remember that we all have sinned and none of us are innocent with out the blood of Jesus Christ. :sunny:
