| | The next few weekends are going to be busy as hell so we just had a nice, relaxed weekend this weekend. Was that too many weekends in one sentence? I think so!
I have finished up my movie shopping and am getting the package ready to send 22 Chinese/Japanese/Asian movies off to another Xangan back in America. It's cool since she has really sparked my interest in the movies here which even local s seem to skip in order to see the much bigger, and usually much worse American movies. Of course last Monday I wanted to get out and see a movie and my only choices were Street Kings and Definitely Maybe, and since I was more in the action mood, I went with Street Kings. Too bad I wasn't in the mood for a comedy since I was laughing more than anything at this movie.
Anyone else see this? Just look at the cast an you will see why I laughed. Keanu Reeves... not bad as an over-agressive, alcoholic cop, but not as cool as when he told Patrick Swayze "I am an F.B.I. agent". And the other tough cops on his squad consistd of Last Comic Standing Jay Moore, Prison Breaker Fernando Sucre, Northern Exposure Radio DJ John Corbett (and from Sex and the City, but I refuse to admit I know that) and their Captain... Forest Whitaker. To make it even better, they added House MD as the head of Internal Affairs and... dramatic pause... Cedric The Entertainer as a heroin addicted, hood dealer. Please someone fire the casting agent in charge of this movie.
Last night we went to the movies and caught the newly released Chinese movie Run Papa Run (Yat Kor Ho Ba Ba) staring one of my new favorites Lewis Koo. We had no idea what it was even about, but since we both like him, we went. It looked from the poster to be a funny, romantic comedy, or a family movie, but it was a movie about a Triad Gang Leader and his attempts to balance his street life with a 'surprise' pregnancy. It was more along the lines of Goodfellas which was cool with me.
Right now I see a lot of Asian movies because I know the stars and I like them. Louis Koo I first saw in Protege as a heroin addict who is terrorizing his ex-wife and child ad was shocked after to know he usually plays romantic and nice guy leads. this movie was cool though since he is still tough, but it shows how good of an actor he is. It was opening weekend and I guess there were only about 40 people in the theatre. There were more people probably seeing Diary of the Dead and that Jackie Chan/Jet Lee American produced movie than this one. A shame...
Another cool thing is that we saw a preview for a new Japanese movie starring Japanese/Taiwanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro which opens next week. It has two different Englsih names, Sweet Rain and Accuracy of Death. The preview looked cool and it seems like a mix of City of Angels and Meet Joe Black as Takeshi is a Death God (Grim Reaper) who comes to earth and spends a week with his victims before deciding to take their souls or not. Of course he meets a girl who has lost everyone in her life and wishes for the 'Sweet Rain' of death (see my very cool use of one of the titles) to take her away, but he ends up in love with her and does not want to take her away. Very cool looking and of course, Takeshi Kaneshiro is one of my favorites since he was in my first Chinese theatre experience Confession of Pain which I just found in a bargain bin at the grocery store tonight for $100nt ($3.25 CAN).
So, ummm... yeah. I'm loving this whole other genre of films I can watch, but I never have that much time. I am completely engulfed in Spiral, the second novel in the Japanese Ring series and just bought Loop, the third in the Trilogy today so I can keep going with the story. Also just finished Dexter Season One, working through Heroes Season Two and bought Rome Seasons 1&2 last week from China. We need another strike for the television shows so I can catch back up! (Still haven't touched Smallville, LOST, Prison Break or Dexter Season 2 yet)
Okay, I'm out. I have the latest UFC event from Montreal last weekend downloaded, I scored a bag of Lays Salt ad Vinegar chips from Jason's Supermarket (a foreigner's heaven) as well as two cans of Root Beer (impossible to find). All I need to do is make the Peanut Butter and Jam sandwiches and I am set for the night. Sometimes it's the simple things that make me smile...
