| | Why I hate Xanga Sites
Changing a person’s cursor in a webpage is just like putting white text on a light gray background or playing music over and over again without a stop button. It is something any good designer does not do.
Sure, I was guilty of one of the crimes below(I loved my Strongbad techno, okay?), but I did it in vain. Many naive youngsters here on Xanga seem to enjoy, and think the rest of the Internet enjoys:
- Clocks that replace your cursor
(Windows has one conveniently placed on the bottom right. Nuff' said)
- Music that cannot be stopped/paused
(How many times can you possibly listen to a blaring guitar before you one is forced to shove a speaker up your arse?)
- Backgrounds that are 500kb+
(Stop with those 3D chaos backgrounds already, they're from yester-year)
- Being forced to click the "here" link when commenting.
(Sorry, Eric )
- Marquees aka 3D Scrolling banner text (with size 20 font or larger)
(This is just plain ol' tacky)
- 10 various scripts/codes that make even broadband user wait a whole season for a page to fully load.
(And you wonder why people don't comment often...)
Your goal in making a website is to make it enjoyable and usable to as many people as possible.
You don't want people to be unable to read your site, or to spend 5 minutes trying to figure out where their cursor is because you are “kEwL” and know how to change cursors using CSS. You don't want potential visitors ripping out their hair because of music they might not like, looping in the background without an "off" button in sight.
Just because the options are there, doesn't mean you need to use them.
I could go on and on, ranting about terrible web designs and implementing craptacularly unecessary HTML on your site. But that would make the little girls and boys who visit this site tear. So I'll stop here since I'm such a good samaritan. |
