| | I don’t think I’ve ever been so shocked in my life. Glenn Beck had the idiot that hosts the most boring morning radio show on the planet (and he's from Nashville! woohoo!) substitute for him this morning while he’s on vacation. You’d think Beck could get better substitutes but evidently not…
Thanks for the Christmas wishes, ya’ll.
As I’m sure ya’ll have noticed (haha) there’s been a conspicuous lack of regular blogging here lately. I’m going to blame that on all of my spare time being taken up with this month’s primary activity – that would be eating. So, now that Christmas has come and gone (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??), here’s a quick recap of some of this month’s activities:
Christmas food-fest 2006 was kicked off in grand style with a progressive dinner for the women in my church. This was lots of fun featuring TONS of delicious food. The appetizers (especially Lerraine’s cheese spread with strawberry jam!!) and desserts (mini cheesecakes) were to die for.
I also went to the Christmas meeting of the Middle Tennessee Christian Fiction Writers, the local chapter of the ACFW. Met some very nice people who will be very good to network with and learn from, so that was rather exciting.
This was followed a week later by the TNT (twenties-and-thirties) Christmas party filled with more delicious food than I could name and a hilariously bad dirty Santa ornament gift exchange. I drew the chance to go first and ended up with a baby’s first Christmas ornament (haha Chris) which no one wanted (of course!), but I ended up giving to my fourteen-month-old goddaughter. It was a HUGE hit with her as she immediately took to carrying it around and chewing on it (it was safe – no sharp edges, just a hunk of plastic). So all was not a loss there.
Somewhere in between there I saw The Holiday twice. I loved it. Somewhere I read a review that described the film as having “surprising depth for a chick flick” (sorry but I can’t remember where I read that or I’d give credit for the quote). Anyway, that statement is very true (almost painfully true at times but do I really want to go into that? Nah…) and (for me, anyway) raised the movie a cut above other romantic comedies. My favorite quote came from one of Eli Wallach’s conversations with Kate Winslet’s character:
“Iris, in the movies, we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, you're behaving like the best friend.”
Girls, I have complete and utter faith that you can grasp the profundity of that moment with me. Guys…well…forget it. For the record, I’m not quoting that from memory (my memory’s pretty good but not that good) – I got it off the film’s IMDB quotes page. (NOTE: I should mention that while I loved this movie I can’t recommend it without reservation, since some of the characters are pretty promiscuous – never mind that most of their relationship problems stem from this promiscuity, if it feels good it has to be okay, right?? *rolls eyes*)
Leah took me to see The Nativity Story which I thought was incredibly well done. The film Is beautifully shot and well scripted. The acting, for the most part, is fantastic. I actually thought Keisha Castle-Hughes was one of the weakest links, acting-wise…she was a little too solemn and occasionally came off as rather bland. Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of Joseph wonderfully done – he brought a nice depth to the character that is usually lacking when Joseph is portrayed on film. Mychael Danna’s score is simply stunning. I loved how the hymns he incorporated in the score (sung in Latin most of the time I think??) gave the score a kind of “high church,” classic feel which was nicely juxtaposed against the film’s rather earthy and authentic visuals. Especially noteworthy is the appearance of “Carol of the Bells,” playing in the frantic moments Joseph is trying to find a room in Bethlehem for Mary, while her birth pains steadily increase.

The Friday & Saturday before Christmas I was very brave (or insane, depending on your point of view) and went SHOPPING. I had two gift cards to Kohl’s that I hadn’t used from my birthday (back in September – what is WRONG with me holding off this long?!) and wanted to look for some new clothes to wear to a dinner Friday night. If you could deal with the crowds, there were great deals to be had there, lemme tell ya. (FYI…I went back Saturday to return something and got more clothes. I know you were wondering…) However, for all of the wonderful deals to be had at Kohl’s, I think the bargain of the day goes to Shoe Carnival, were I got two pairs of heels for $32.00 (normally $50 a pair). I just LOVE THEM!!
The dinner, capping off a year of monthly meetings for the girls group led by Mrs. Pastor, was incredibly delicious (thank you Melissa, Lavell, and Elizabeth!!). It was also a little bit of a bittersweet time, marking the end of our year together. But the bittersweet was balanced by a healthy dose of encouragement, hope, and optimism. I am so grateful for how Mrs. Pastor mentored, guided, and sowed seeds of faith and hope into each of our lives this past year.
Saturday afternoon/evening five of us girls (I am blessed with such great friends!) got together to watch Christmas movies, yak, and eat, eat, EAT. We watched White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street (the remake with Dylan McDermott), and Christmas in Connecticut. The remake of 34th Street actually surprised me by being pretty good. I’m not a purist as far as that story goes as the original has never been one of my favorite movies. I also want to point out that while watching White Christmas for the umpteenth time, it just “hit” me that the great Michael Curtiz was the director of this classic film. That man was a GENIUS, able to direct everything from drama (The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Casablanca) to adventure (The Sea Hawk, The Adventures of Robin Hood), westerns (The Comancheros) to musicals. Such versatility. Absolutely brilliant.
Okay, I’m over that. Oooh, I should also mention that I discovered Altoids Dark Chocolate Dipped Mints over the weekend. Pure wonderfulness! Does anyone know if this is available year-round or if they are just a seasonal thing? I also discovered that CoffeeMate’s Peppermint Mocha creamer jazzes up plain Lipton black tea nicely. And don’t even get me started on the yumminess that is Hershey’s Candy Cane kisses (ohmygosh they are SOOOO good!). Just FYI.
So what was everyone’s favorite Christmas present?
