Gah...I love and adore Errol Flynn.  The man was a genius. Terribly underrated but a genius nonetheless. Sparks absolutely fly between Flynn's Essex and Davis' Elizabeth...a more unlikely pair I doubt you'll find, but they make it work. They actually had a peculiar sort of chemistry, if I dare say it. Watching the above makes for an interesting comparision between Bette Davis' Elizabeth and Anne-Marie Duff's in Masterpiece Theater's The Virgin Queen (or Helen Mirren's in Elizabeth I for that matter...if you can get past the disemboweling scenes...yuck!!), which PBS is reshowing (part 2 due to air next Sunday). One constant (besides the fact that Elizabeth was brilliant) is that EI must have been so flippin' weird...very quirky woman if half of the portrayals are to be believed.

Total honesty here. I watched The Virgin Queen last year and found it to be "different" for lack of a better word. How could she not know her lover was married? I also have to say that I'm with you, I think she was very strange if what is being portrayed as fact is really the way it all went down in history. And how about that French putz? There are absolutely no words to describe what a sick little twit of a defunct derelict that guy was. A regular prissy panted perv. He totally made my skin crawl.

ryc: the FIRST one I picked out of the box is Nero Wolfe, of course!!!! It's called four to go, and is more like novellas or something. Some Agatha Christies, John Le Carre, etc.
