One of the places we visited while in Quincy, Ill was the Maid Rite.  Our brother used to work there and we remembered the wonderful Maid Rite sandwiches . . . sort of ground beef on a bun and you put what ever sauce you wanted on them.  I kind of wish now that we hadn't gone, because in my memory those were indeed wonderful sandwiches, but I think that our memories were a little faulty or at least embellished a bit, because 45 years later and I didn't think they were very good.  I hate it when you bust a bubble like that.

Maybe your memory of the sandwiches were right but in the time in between then and now your taste has changed.  :) I'm enjoying your trip.

Have a blessed week & God keep you safe.    HUGS

Alas, I shared your evaluation of the Maid Rite sandwiches. They just didn't live up to the memory. But then I'm glad we went because the vinegar pie was a real find.

Was it nice to sleep in today? Or did you? I thought of you at 6:30 this morning when I got up.  I know it was nice to not have to get dressed and go to work today. Happy Retirement.  :sunny:

Thomas Wolfe was right, eh?     You really can't go home again and find the same memories of long ago.    I used to think my grandma's house was huge, but years later as I look at it, I see it really is quite ordinary and not so big.

But as SewSew says, your tastes might have changed too.    I hardly believe I could enjoy what we called a Shipwreck drink from our corner drugstore, when I was in highschool, or that it would be my choice drink today.    It had a squirt of everything on the soda bar in it,  then the glass was filled with something fizzy.     I remember the cloudy light brown color of it well, but doubt it was really very good.

Know what?  I bet they changed the way they made them over the years, so the ones they used to make were better.  I've had that happen before.  Sometimes it's just the quality of the food itself has changed - not necessarily how they made them before.  Sorry it burst your bubble.

To answer Alice's question, YES, I did wake up at 6:30 this morning as I normally do . . . then I promptly went back to sleep for another hour.

I've enjoyed seeing your pictures of Quincy.  I'm sorry that the Maid Rite wasn't the same as you remembered.  I was going to say what LetMeGoTo said, that maybe they changed the way they made them.  Congratulations on your retirement!!  I can't wait for mine, and I have 3 years and 7 months to go.  I sometimes wake up at 5:15 on Saturdays or Sundays.  It's nice to be able to go back to sleep for a while longer.  :)

What is vinegar pie????

I read your comment on Alice's blog about killing the rat. I wish you lived near me.  A few weeks ago there was a rat eating out of my cat's bowl. It was kind of unusual looking, round and furry and sweet (never thought I'd say that about a rat).  She looked at my kid and at me and slowly turned and trundled, very pregnant, out of the house and into the cat's house. The cat couldn't have cared less.  I don't want a rat in the house (again) but didn't have your courage, so I kept the cat in and put out lots of poisoned food.   Anything not to watch it die.

They could have changed their "recipe" ;)

I feel the same about our Isaly's. We still have an Isaly's in town. It is an old fashioned deli with a soda fountain. Somewhat of a convenience store with some bread and such. They are famous for their chipped chopped ham. I don't know why. It is so fatty but we all loved it. I wouldn't eat any of it now if I were paid to. It did make excellent ham bar-b-Q's though. Also they had "sky scraper" ice cream cones. My husband has a sister who worked in an Isaly's back in 1967 and they had already been in business for many years. So for us to still have an Isaly's in town is a marvel. There were as many Isaly's as there were McDonald's at that time.

Maid Rite! I was just telling stories about that just the other day. Thanks for the warning not to go there! I will leave that myth intact!
