| Once upon a time, there was a period called the Great Depression.
And now it seems that we'r getting closer to experience a prolong-longed depression in global economy.
If there's any reason against passing the bailout plan, it would be that US$700bn is probably no enough to do the trick.
What a lot of ppl don't realize is that this supposedly "Wall Street Bailout" is bailing out Main Street as well. If the bill doesn't get passed eventually, banks will stop lending (or give you ridiculous rates, which is no difference than saying I dun wanna lend at all). Some corps will fail becasue they can't meet debt obligation and go busted. But most corps will stop growing their business, start laying off employees massively.
And this vicious cycle will likely go on for a while. Of course the "bailing out Main Street part" will need at least months and years of lag to prove, (well, only if the plan doesn't go through eventually). But by the time a 50-year old Virginian got laid off by the firm he has worked for in the last 30 years, his pension fund got absolutely trashed because of the devil DC scheme, his mortgage is essentially carrying negative equity, and he found out there's no more financing when buying a GM SUV for his son's college graduation (And then sales man goes "Sure if you pay 20% p.a, we'r very happy to provide full financing)...
He may then realise banking system is more than just a Wall Street thing.
