Fascinating Art

I've been meaning to share the delightful art of this Canadian artist with anyone who hasn't been lucky enough to encounter him yet.

Rob Gonsalves is an award-winning master of trompe l'oeil art... the more you look, the more amazing his visions become.

I immediately think of M.C. Escher whenever I look at his work, which he describes as "magic realism." He often mentions Magritte as an influence also.

You can buy his pictures here, there, and everywhere on the Internet, and no wonder -- have a look and you'll see what I mean. Here's one of the children's books that he has published, too. They are a bit more affordable than copies of his art...

I'll just show you three paintings that I particularly enjoy. I have an interest in architectural forms and still like to play with building blocks; also, "Table Top Towers" was the first Gonsalves picture I ever saw, so it has a warm spot in my heart.

The next one, "Here Comes the Flood," symbolizes for me the dangerous overpopulation problem humanity is creating globally. I thought of it especially today while helping my husband to prepare a "heritage designation" application to protect our historic neighbourhood, which is in danger of being overrun by profiteering townhouse builders.

In "The Woods Within," I enjoy the somewhat eerie transition from the civilized, comforting hearthside scene to the dark primeval forest where perhaps no man has yet set foot. It has a lovely atmosphere.

No, I don't know him personally (grin), and no, he isn't paying me. But he's from my neck of the woods, so I wanted to be sure all my Xanga acquaintances got a chance to enjoy him. One day maybe I'll be able to afford to indulge in my very own framed copies of his work! I guess it all depends on how well this education thing goes, eh?

You are related to Wilbur Shaw!  Wow, thats cool!  Growing up in Indiana I have heard that name many times.  We are off, to go cook our brains at the track. Ack!

Oh my gosh!  His work is AMAZING!!!  Makes me want to get that book.  I went to Amazon and was able to "look inside".  Even though my kids are older (youngest is 13), that would be a good one to have in their "library".  Thanks for the links!!!

RYC...Yeah, don't think they are going to give a WOMAN that kind of money, even if they ADMITTED I did that work.  It's never going to happen.  I'm going to stick around, get vested, and then I'm history.  It's all about the retirement!

Have a great weekend!

That's some very cool artwork and they look very cool, especiall the blue water that turns into kids with blue boards.

RYC: You are very lucky to have a spousal unit who will weed. Mine won't. But he will take the chinsaw to the overgrowing bushes and I told him he has to do it tomorrow. Unfortunately, today is auto-racing day. I can't stand that stuff.

Very cool. I've explored trompe l'oeil befoer and it is something else. Difficult to master. I like how he refers to it as magic realism! I never thought of connecting it to magical realism the fiction genre before, but it fits perfectly in that vein. G.G. Marquez, of course, comes to mind with his short stories. This is very interesting, I'm going to have to check into those sites. Thanks for introducing him to us!

RYC: Ahaha! I shall look for that song online and see if I can find it. It sounds as if it would fit my dark-brooding mood re: fence posts to a T.
