Quick...

... somebody give me some interesting ideas about directions in current Anglo-Saxon scholarship! I gotta figure out something brilliant and scintillating to propose when I meet my prof about my undergrad thesis credit on Tuesday morning.

*simmer* *simmer*

And somebody tell these darned cicadas to shut up already!

Later edit: You guys are all really cute!

Desperation topic: Comparing and contrasting the two religious views of the island - the Pagan Norse Gods of the Anglo-Saxons / Germans and early Roman Christianity as evidenced in Beowolf and other surviving literature of the time. Might not hurt to torture yourself through a bit of Carlisle as he was a very pro-pagan historian / lecturer. If possible, link the duality of the pagan tradition and early Christian beliefs as one of the causes of lollardy, the acceptance of Wycliffe's writings and protestantism.
Yeah, I'm grasping at straws here on your behalf, but there must be something therein - sadly I'm not sure where current research is leaning.

Wow.  Cicadas are nice.  Crickets too.  They mean it's summer.  Anything that means it's summer is SACRED!  We here in CT like the rest of the country apparently are having 100º weather.  Can't help u on the lit question.  Never read Beowulf...

Earplugs are good as regards snoring, maybe for cicadas too. I like the wax ones best.

You could move to England..lots of Anglo Saxons and no cicadas.

I can't stand cicadas, they just just annoy me. Then again, so does George Carlin, but in a completly different way. :p

Cicadas sound GREAT. They are the hearalds of August and I hear that is a great month. As for Anglo-Saxon, how bout something to do with Beowulf's swimming ability. Did Jacques Cousteau violate Beowulf's preexisting claim to be the inventor of the Self Contained Underwater Breathing Aparatus? Was Beowulf undead? Why do Grendle and his mother sometimes seem to be horrible monsters and sometimes an unlucky widow and her orphan son everyone is picking on. Compare the SCUBA equipment used by Grendle's mother to that of Beowuolf. Now compare both to modern SCUBA equipment. Always cave dive with at least TWO lights.

For the artists of the past when there was no photography, paintings was the only reproduction of realistic subjects. And now, I think they have a harder time competing with photographic works except for those who truly enjoy painted works. Yet, we still buy paintings for their realistic effects...but it's getting less and less often...now, we go for artistic renditions of say Japanese court life, something that is ancient without the photographic impression back in ancient years. Those we still buy.
