  • Screwge It

    (*AHEM* I mean Scrooge...)

I'm canceling Christmas. Okay, not all of it - we can still do all of the family togetherness type stuff -  just the part where I fight the crowds for the things on the top of the wish lists...I'm not doing it. I don't "do" Black Friday, either. Those of you who have been reading my blog for any appreciable amount of time know I hate shopping any time of the year, so this statement won't come as much of a shock to you. Yes, I can shop online and not have to leave the comfort of my own home, and I may, at some point. We'll see.

I think I'm going to wait until after Christmas to do any gift giving. I'll wait until after the rush, after everyone goes back to exchange or take back what "Auntie Margaret" thought was just perfect for them, but they really can't stand.

Every year I hear the same thing - everybody saying they can't stand how commercialized Christmas has become, but what is going to change it? Who is going to stand up and say, "This is not what this holiday is all about! I'm not participating!!" I will. I'm not playing anymore, not by the rules of the toy manufacturers, not by the rules of the mega-stores.

Call me Scrooge, but I just see it as changing the way my family and I view this time of year...a time to be together and share the warmth of the season, not the quantity and quality of the gifts underneath the tree. Time for me to start some new family traditions, ones that don't include going into debt until the next holiday season rolls around.

What does this time of year really mean to you?

Have you ever implemented new traditions in your families holiday celebration?

DD #2, Marisa, is away with her father and his family until Monday. DS, Jaden, is with his father this weekend. The only "kid" home right now is DD #1, Catlin, and she's making plans as I type to go somewhere. I may have the whole weekend off from parenting duties! The planets have aligned!! Now, what the heck am I gonna do until Monday?

    My mother has posted.

    isn't madonna cancelling christmas, too?

I try to keep Jesus at the center of Christmas. It is hard sometimes, in fact most of the times, but I've found if I do that then I can have a good Christmas no matter what the circumstances. I can understand your angst. My wife and MIL got up at 4 a.m. today. How ridiculous!

^^^^^^^ Isn't Madonna Jewish now or something?  :ssboohoo:

If I had tons of money I would love to shop and gift give, that would be fun to me.  Not that I am a big shopper, but if I had the money I would want to buy for friends and family.  But i don't have the money, so it's just a big stress ball to me.

We're celebrating winter and family and togetherness. We celebrate the winter solstice. To make it easier, we celebrate it on Xmas day. When we were younger, we were celebrating the same things. It's the spirit of giving, the celebration of human goodness that we celebrate. We choose to do it on the same day as the commericalist holiday and the propagandist church declared holiday just to make it easier.

I love the holiday season. The crisp cool air, the soft wet snow, the green and reds of the poisonous plants we bring indoors because they remind us that winter will not be too long and that things survive, the hustle and bustle, the thought involved in finding the perfect gift for a loved one, seeing them open it and KNOW you struck gold with that gift...even if it only cost you 50 cents. I freaking love the holidays. Most years anyway.

I agree with you I thonk it is a good idea to cancel christmas at last all the commercialized stuff. I think back when it used to be a time of family anfd friends not what you got. I gues I am a scrooge too but Christmas just isn't the same as it used to be

I'm not a fan of shopping either .. and I definitely hate shopping this time of the year.  I stayed FAR away from malls and stores today.  I hope to do a lot of on-line shopping .. it's just easier!

This time of the year means ADDED stress in my life.  Running around trying to find the right gift for people who don't need anything and/or people who I don't really want to buy for, but feel obligated.  It's too commercial, and I don't really enjoy it.  I'm with you .. I'm a huge Scrooge!

    Have a relaxing weekend! :sscrush:

  • DaBombMom2

Here's an idea ... with all your "spare" time, you can go shopping!!

  • porcupinesol

I do not like shopping, that is why my figners do the shopping online as much as possible........and I must say I do shop for Jenny at Talbots, close to Christmas, because if you do it right, they have a 50% of after Christmas sale and I take my receipts in to get all the lovely money off.  I got first choices and after Christmas net prices.......life is good, and it is Patriotic to shop, as the retailers need the Christmas season to make it for the year.  SO go celebrate the Lord's birth, and support our economy all at the same time!  ROCK ON

  • bronxbombette

I love going to church this time of the year, its an instant mood-booster for me! I must admit, I love shopping, however I know very well that Jesus is the reason for the season! Will you be putting up any decorations?

  • Spacey1

I am this close to cancelling Christmas with anyone other than my husband and kids. Sister in laws are driving me batty already (actually just pissing me off) and I always try to get out of going to my side of the family.

    I feel you...

    We don't do Black Friday.

Inspired by a recent biscuitking sermon, I am trying to change the way we think about Christmas and focus on the important parts.  Personally, I get into a warped frame of mind where I try to match what other people give me.  "Oh they would really like this 'thing', but it only costs $10 and I really need to give them a $20 gift because that's what they give me etc"...Plus which, they don't really need anything to begin with!  I don't either.  So lets both of us give our $20 to someone who really needs it.  Its gonna be difficult to change, but we're trying.

Micahvus is only a few years old, but I've grown to love this family tradition.  I really, really love this time of year. I love the decorations, the music, the effort family members go to see each other.  If we can get away ffrom the burdensome gift matching, I will enjoy it more.

Stringing together am empty nest is awesome!  I predict fair seas fir ye, PQ.

I'm not crazy about Christmas shopping, which is why I try to get everything done by Thanksgiving.  I'd rather not wait in crazy lines and listen to screaming babies all day.

I still like giving/receiving gifts, I feel that it's a way of showing you care about people because you're willing to spend your money on something you know the person will like or love.  At the same time, I think that Christmas dinner is the second-best part of the holiday, even if my grandma serves it at 4pm haha

I don't think I could ever cancel Christmas, but that's just me.

  • Xcholo4u

I always get stuff for my kids but S.O and I always shop after Christmas for our gifts. You needed this break, Lisa. This time of year is about family and being grateful for health. Last year sucked ass with my kids being so damn sick.
