I'm back!

In 2 days... I will have been in Toronto for 7 full months... its amazing that it has been a year since my last post... so much has happened in the past year... graduating, moving out, starting work and growing up. As a new chapter in life is opening, its time to flip back the pages, to a time where everything seemed happier, seemed simpler. At a time not too long ago, and a place not too far from home...

Four years ago we entered UBC. Froshees they called us. We were young, energetic and timid; not knowing exactly what to expect... looking to succeed, discover who we truly are, and to make new friends. Gone were teachers and classrooms; yes, professors and lecture halls were here to stay. No longer was attendance taken at every class, YOU made your own schedules now. Looking at the breaks and STTs where you knew you were going to meet your new best friends. This was a time to be excited about the future... to look forward to what was going to happen. Back then, the "Skin Collector" was the skin collected; "I am Graduating UBC" wasn't even a thought, and West Vancouver was still thought to be the same as Vancouver West. Shohoku was only found in comic books and Dynasty was the Lakers. But as the year went on, the building blocks that would become the foundation for the next four years started to be laid down. Four years ago we first met the friends who would later on help define us our university legacys. Four years ago we first joined those cult-like student clubs that later on brought us so much joy, frustration, love, friends and a chance to see what the real world is like. Four years ago we first learned that studying in University is not like high school. Four years ago, we couldn't wait to grow up.

Three years ago we moved into Angus full time, there was still a distinction between direct entry and pre-comm transfers. We had 1 term to feel superior, 1 term before everybody took the same courses. No longer the ignorant froshees, we had a new attitude. Though still searching for ourselves, trying to discover what we wanted in life. We started expanding our group of friends within comm., we went to a business conference for the first time, we became active in student clubs, voluteered to be class liasons, and we became more brave and outspoken in class (and befriended profs in the process). Nicknames came and gone (some given by profs), as did your crushes on others (as well as others on you). Acquaintances became friends, who later turned to be ex-friends. We learned to challenge ourselves, stormed that wall we never thought we could get over. Three years ago we started developing our core. Three years ago we started clubbing legally. Three years ago we started thinking about what we wanted to do in life and chose our majors. Yet still, three years ago we couldn't wait to grow up.

Two years ago we were happy. We had our majors, some of us had significant director positions in our clubs. We went out more, hung out more. Two years ago we realized who our true friends are and cherished the time we spent with them. We sort of knew where we would fit in, but it seemed like we were still looking for something else. Angus started to not feel the same anymore, as mandarin -- no, putonghua, became the dominant language of Angus. Two years ago we started talking about working and graduating, thinking it was still so far away. Two years ago we discovered how important we were to our clubs, and how important the clubs were to us. Two years ago we started to focus a bit more in school. We also started to realize that time really does fly, but we still couldn't wait to grow up.

One year ago we went back to school for the final time. No longer did we sit in class on the first day hoping there would there would be a pretty new classmate for us to befriend. Our schedules were impeccable, starting school late and ending early; long intentional breaks to catch up with friends and maximize the time we had together. Midterms but no finals; finals but no midterms; no finals and no midterms; we were the experts in course planning, or Reg4. Projects came and went, no more textbook stuff, all real life problems. Everything we did was the last... we knew that if we don't seize the opportunities infront of us, they will soon disappear. We said what we wanted to say, we did what we wanted to do. We started job searching, self-searching. We got accepted, we got rejected, then re-accepted. We found where we wanted to go, or where we thought we wanted to go. And we realized, that everything was going to change. Everything was bittersweet, everytime something happy happened, you were sad because you knew it was not going to last. We shed countless tears, some infront of friends, but mostly behind closed doors. People hooked up, people broke up. And as the clock ticked down, many of us found our relationships to be stronger than they ever were, stronger than we ever thought they would be. May 31 came too soon, the convocation went by too quickly. It was inevitible, it was here. We had finally all grown up.

Now we finally realize that we could have waited to grow up. We realize that time slipped by too quick and goodbyes were said too hastily. Saying good-bye to our friends, our loved ones, our family, our home. Maybe for a short time, maybe forever. Soon everybody will have a job, embarking on a career, not knowing when is the next time everybody will be together again. Together recognized as the class of 2006, the last batch of froshees to enter the UBC Faculty of Commerce. Although we are excited about starting something new, we are sad about what we will leave behind. Anxious to move on? Yes and no. Now we realize just how important friends how, how much fun we really had in the past four years. Now we wish we could be younger. We wish we could have taken the time to appreciate, to cherish each and every moment... to slow down time. Before we had to say good-bye.

When will we re-unite? When will we be together again? Who knows. But when we do, it is certain we will be different people. We will have experienced the working life, started living the life we want to live, met new friends, tried new things, visited new places. We will be new people, but we will still be searching for our identity. We will have worked jobs, switched jobs, succeeded and failed at things we tried. We will know more about ourselves and what we want to become. We will remember the good times and look fondly back at the memories. Although we will have created new memories, those of the past will forever be engraved in our hearts. In the years to come, one thing will still remain, we will still have the same best friends. Maybe you known them since elementary school, maybe second year, maybe even fourth year. But without them, we would have nothing. Four years brought change. But it was friendship that held us strong when the surroundings were shaky. In good times and bad, through laughter and tears, through relationships, bad marks, friend problems, and love... our friends showed us that life was worth living. With them, we wanted to grow up quickly. Now, they are the only one with whom we will remain forever young. Truly, "friends are gold" (G.L.).

Some things if you just leave it, they slowly fade into obscurity... like memories, though you may not completely forget them, sometimes they are just not on the top of your mind, and eventually you may forget them. This is why I have decided to (at least try) revive this blog. To expres my thoughts, keep in touch with friends and most importantly, to preserve my memories here. Hopefully I can keep it up.

In closing, a lot of people have been asking me about Morris' gf lately ... pics will be uploaded later...

P.S. I haven't made a post in over a year, can I get some e-props?
