 HELPPPPPPPPPPP!!!

ok folks, heres the deal. Our math teacher told us today, that if we could solve this one problem(more like a riddle really) we would get 2 free A quizzes...meaning we wont have to take 2 quizzes and he'll give us an A for both. He said its an obvious answer, once you know it...or hear it. I think I know the answer...but Im curious what you all think.

Your school/job just had an electrician come out because the wiring was messed up in one of the rooms. The electrician comes and rewires everything. The 3 lights in the room now work, only problem is...the electrician never marked which switch turned on which light. Now imagine that you are alone and you have to figure out which switch(1,2,or 3)Turns on which bulb(1,2,or 3).

Directions below....

You have to start in the room with the switches(SW1,SW2,SW3). At the bottom corner of each room...you will see a D...this represents the doorways. Heres the catch...once you enter the bulb room(B1,B2,B3) you cant leave it. So that means you cant flip a switch,go see which bulb lit up,and go back n try another switch. How can you find out what switch lights which bulb??

Remember he said the answer is obvious...and that when you hear it youll be like.....Oh dam,I should have thought o that.

Im going tell you the answer I came up with in the comments of this post...

Good Luck...and HELP!!! lol

I asked my neighbor to help me out but he was talkin bout voltage testers n shit like that...which Ive been led to believe that this would involve common sense more so. I mean I dont carry a voltage tester around with me ya know what I mean...lol
I go into the switch room.....I turn on SW1,I leave it on for a few minutes. I shut off SW1 and I flip on SW2...I then run into the bulb room. I see that light B3 is on(this means SW2 works B3) I then have B1 and B2 left.....I get on a chair and I feel both lights...B1 is warm and B2 is cold(this means that B1 was the light that was on when I hit SW1) that leaves SW3 to control B2.
What ya think??

I KNOW!!!! Ok, you stand in the room with the switches, you flip one at a time until you find out which one turns of the light in the room  you are in, then  you mark that one. Then you flip off one of the two remaining switches and go to each room and see which one is turned off and the switch you flipped off is for that room and obviously the third switch, the last switch is for the last room!!!!

ok but the lights are all in the same room at least the way he made it sound...so the switch room wouldnt be affected at all. Why the switches are in a seperate room is beyond me but thats the situation he gave us.Im gonna keep that one in mind though just because he may have been tryin to throw us off.

i agree wif u Dap!  i also thought of that solution!  i think i've read this puzzle b4 though and i think its got something to do with marking the bulbs in such a way that when u switch them on, u'll know in which sequence it was done.  now if i can only remember...
knock down the wall??
put a video camera in the room?

You turn light switch #1 on for a few.... then turn it off. then turn switch #2 on. Go into the room, If the light is on, then it was #2. If the light is Off, feel the light bulb, and if its warm, then it was #1. If its not warm and not on then you know it was #3.

I agree with you...or conversely, have them all on for awhile, turn one off, wait a few minutes, turn another off and go immediately to the bulb room and use the visual and relative warmth touch cues to sort them out.

This sounds kinda similar to one I know:
You’re standing for a door, behind that door is a room with only one lightbulb.
There are 3 switches next to the door (on the outside of the room).
You have to find out which one is the right one to turn on the light.
Sounds easy, huh?
This is the catch: you may only enter the room once to check the light.
How can you find out which switch is the right one?

Remarks:
It’s impossible to look in the room, there are no gaps.
Once you go inside the room you can’t use the switches anymore, you go outside and close the door behind you.
You may use the switches as often as you like and whenever you want.

I have seen this problem before in a logic book and you already have the right answer.
