  • I recently joined a Facebook group. The concept of which is completely my sence of humour. It is called..
"On May 15th 2008, Everyone go out and panic buy CARROTS!"

Here is the description, from the guy who created the group.
Basically, a few nights ago, when I was very very drunk, I came up with the idea that everybody should go out and panic buy a certain product on a specific day.
I'm not quite sure what the reason behind this is is, other than the fact that a global shortage of carrots would be quite a laugh.
So, what I'm asking everybody to do, is on the 15th May, 2008 go out and buy a load of carrots. IF EVERYBODY DOES THIS, WE CAN MAKE THIS GLOBAL SHORTAGE OF CARROTS HAPPEN!

How funny! I'm not sure if the term "panic buy" that is only used in the UK. Just incase, i'll explain it. The media loves a good story. So when they throw headlines out there that suggest something like all bakers are dying of some weird unknown disease, tons of people then go out and buy two months worth of bread. This is panic buying. A few hundred people then end up with what could feed thosands. People go without their sandwiches. People get upset. All apart from those Atkin dietiers, who won't give a shit anyway and sit there all smug.

So you can see from my example, how panic buying is pretty serious. We really don't want to make the pale faced Atkin's people any more smug.

But actually organising a panic buy on a food that people don't really need, (to me), is funny stuff! I can't imagine this idea actually taking off, but imagine if it does! A national shortage of carrots! Maybe I could turn this idea global. Then all the carrots we buy, we could send over to the people that are suffering in the far East because of the panic buying of rice.

Carrot soup anyone? Carrot cake? or.. ermm... what the hell else can you do with a carrot?

    Child friendly answers only please.

Im in that group too! I havent thought ahead to what I'm going to do with the things actually... hmm. I'm thinking I'll go with leaving carrots on famous landmarks around my home city... Perhaps the manchester eye, Urbis, or just knocking about in one of the unis there...

On the other hand, I might start using them in my act, if I can think of anything to use them in.... wait... rabbits eat carrots!

Carrots are a nifty ingredient. They add good flavor to many soups and stews. I even put finely chopped ones in my chili and it's great. Salads, of course. I don't like to just eat them raw but chopped up in a soup or something they're great. And they're loaded with nutrition. Sky's the limit with them. I'll try to remember to stock up on the 15th.

i'm in!  that is...on the fifteenth of may of this year, i shall go into town and buy many, many carrots.  it's something i've been planning on doing anyway (not so much the panic buying aspect--just the carrot buying) because there are all these little bunnies running around the bushes and lawns of my apartment complex, and every time i see them, i reiterate my long-overdue promise of buying carrots for them.

so there's something people can do with their carrots:  help out the bunny populations by tossing a few errant roots into some local bushery.

I have this wonderful recipe called "copper pennies." It's basically a cold carrot salad with a sweet-n-sour dressing.

lol.. interesting. some facebook gifts are very pointless! wow, carrots? that's a weird food for panic buys.

  • browneyedpsycho

that's hilarious,  I'm sure someone will flip out and buy some just BECAUSE ..........like a Y2K mess or something  LOL

Facebook,  I am on there,  but I don't like it,  seems like all everyone does is throw sheep,  and wierd stuff  :P  I sometimes shut mine down,  and put it back, I don't know why,  I don't even like it  !  LOL

I totally agree with you on the humor in this.  And I'll do my part in the panic buy of carrots on the 15th!  I can throw them at my criminal law professor after I finish taking his final exam...

Like when they call for a snowstorm and people go into panic buying milk, bread, and eggs. God knows we can't get by two days without eggs. -Jason

the rice "shortage" is ridiculous. what's funny is all the americans hording it like it's actually part of our regular diets.

"oh shit hun, there's a shortage of rice. we better buy a lot before they run out"
"but you don't eat rice. i mean i think we had it that one time, but that was like years ago"
"yes... but there is a SHORTAGE. what if i really really like rice and i would never know because there is none? i have to buy some"

  • notagoose

Sounds about as valid a Facebook group as any I've seen!

Carrots are good in stews. In muffins. In cakes. In coleslaw. On their own, raw. Julienned in a nice stir fry. So many possibilities!

I'm  thinking of panic buying cream cakes

My dog and I love snacking on carrots. I think I'm going to get stock in a produce company or start my own carrot farm.

  • bricebanner

Damn, I really want this to work!  Otherwise participants will just be seen as carrot-hording weirdos.  Imagine trying to explain the large amounts of carrots that are taking up your space.
