I.....am......so....sore!

We spent all day doing Marine Corps Martial Arts, and though it's only a refresher course for me, I've never practiced falls and throws on frozen ground. Did get a good sparring session with my buddy Carter, he clocked me pretty good on the chin. We do the same thing tomorrow, and it's likely to snow around the time we start teaching blood chokes.

God is so good, and provides even when we don't ask. My roommate Harris is a godly guy, and we've started reading our Bibles together in the evenings. Having another believer in such close proximity has been a blessing and a strength.

Ballad of the Devil's Backbone Tavern, by Todd Snider

Old Miss Virgy tended bar at this shack out in the hills
It never made her any money, boys, but paid of all her bills
Now she must have been 80 years old but her heart was warm
And her beer was cold
She gave away more than she ever sold
Smiling all the time
I used to sing off in the corner every Friday night
To a loud crowd of cowboys, bikers and bar room fights
They were drinking beer, carrying on, not a one of them listening to one of my songs
But old Miss Virgy sang along
She said she knew 'em all by heart
And then one night after closing she poured me another beer
She said "Come on over and sit down you little shit
I got something you need to hear"
She said "Life ain't easy getting through everybody's gonna make things tough on you
But I can tell you right now if you dig what you do, they will never get you down"

She said life's too short to worry
Life's too long to wait
Too short not to love everybody
Life's too long to hate
I meet a lot of men who haggle and finagle all the time
Trying to save a nickel or make a dime
Not me, no sireee, I ain't got the time

Now I ain't seen Ol' Virgy in must have been about ten years
I've been bumming around this country singing my songs for tips and beers
Now the nights are long
The driving's tough
Hotels stink, and the pay sucks
But I can't dig what I do enough, so it never gets be down

I say life's too short to worry
Life's too long to wait
Too short not to love everybody
Life's too long to hate
I meet a lot of men who haggle and finagle all the time
Trying to save a nickel or make a dime
Not me, no sireee, I ain't got the time

I would describe learning at The Basic School like being expected to drink from a fire hose turned on full blast and not waste any of the water. The curriculum, no bull, is the equivalent of 2 1/2 years worth of college classes crammed into a semester's worth of time. But I do get paid to run around with an M-16 and play with artillery, so I think I can stand a few long, cold nights.

"We promise you sleepless nights, burned-out nerves and muscles so sore you will puke. Welcome to Bravo Company, gentlemen, laissez le bon ton roulez."

I think it's safe to say nobody comes around here anymore. It's almost like I'm walking back into a ghost town saloon I used to own, and the only reason I don't burn it down is sentimental value. That and I'm just too flippin' lazy to do it.

The worst part of studying is when you're done and you look up and EVERYTHING IS SQUIGGLY!! Makes me feel like I need glasses, and I know I do because my dad, his dad, and my mom's dad ALL HAVE GLASSES. And none of them look like Clark Kent, so my hopes that I will aren't that high.

So I've just finished my "Early Christian Thought" class tonight, after a rousing discussion of how much of a jerk Paul apparently was, and I was dumbfounded by the hostility of the class towards Christianity. Every verse we read in the class is dissected and analyzed for any possible fault or misquotation. Any time the professor refers to his 'Baptist friend,' the class groans with sympathy as he tells yet another anecdote of how ignorant or mean-spirited this Baptist is. The first night of class I overheard two girls talking about how the DaVinci Code had changed their lives and that they were taking the class to further prove the fraud of Christianity.
And the few believers in the class aren't helping. People that raise their hands and tell how they heard God told them to do this or refrain from that or my new personal favorite, "You're going to sin, so don't fight it." My problem with these people is that their arguments are based less on hard facts and more on emotions. What part of being "swift to hear, slow to speak" did these people not understand?
For myself, I find it very difficult to defend my faith when I'm not allowed to cite the divine. So this class, however painful it may be for me, will only help me grow stronger and wiser in my faith. If nothing else, it'll give me a chance to pray for God to reveal Himself. And if you're a Calvinist and make a remark about that last statement, I will find you and I will cut you.
