Is she selfish to deny all thoughts of self, to wash
her hands of her own pale life, or is it simplest wisdom
to sink no teeth into the world, to leave no foot
or finger print, but to live as one already half gone,
a blooming sail, the merest scrim between here and not?
Greg brought poetry to dinner last night and won several favorable points in my book. The above is a passage from Moon Jelly by Gabriel Spera, of whom I had never heard before now. I think I'm a fan. Greg left the book for Erin and me to peruse at our leisure, and I've nearly finished devouring it already.
So what with Greg reading poetry and performing hilarious/dramatic monologues, and Daniel talking book-talk or Marx Brothers movies with me almost nonstop, I would call it a successful evening. I'm pretty much going to need a Hodge-Household library card, I'm thinking, 'cause this was the most common line I used all night: "Do you own that book? May I borrow it, please?" I should have enough reading material to last me a lifetime or two!
I was also given hope for the fulfillment of an age-old dream!
You see, I have said for some time now that jalapenos are good on everything. They're good on pizza, in sandwhiches, in soups, in salads, in pasta . . . you name it, they're good in it.
"Why," quothe I, "I believe jalapeno peppers would be good in ice cream, even!"
I said this last night, and would you believe it? The boys informed me that there is an ice cream shop not far from Campbell wherein is often served Jalapeno Ice Cream!
My little heart skipped a beat or two.
Within the year, my dears, I intend to sample this delicacy and find out whether or not my theory is true.
Interesting quote of the evening: "Girls tend to hold onto hope for a lost relationship long after hope is gone."
And boys don't?
Perhaps not.
I think I've met a few cases where the male in the situation was the one holding out false hope. But being a girl (and a former RA), I suppose I've encountered more from the female side. Besides, it's not stepping outside social propriety for a jilted male to waltz over and ask another girl out the day after his jilting . . . jilted girls however, (at least those with ladylike sensibilities), don't have that option.
So do girls hold out false hope longer simply because there are no other options in their narrow lives?
Girls are dumb.
Thank heaven this dinner-table discussion lasted a matter of three minutes, and then I was off on talk of book titles and ice cream flavors once again . . . .
Oh, and quick addition: Here is the poster I made for Erin yesterday.
She hasn't seen it yet . . . hope she likes it! Are any of you familiar with these song lyrics?
Obviously, I found my camera battery charger . . . . |
