| | OK. Another dream. If I keep this up, maybe I should keep a separate dream journal? (ignoring the paper one I have.)
This dream started out like a movie preview. I could see all the characters, the story was laid out for me, it was very tidy. Eventually, I started to be the characters, but it started out so tidy and detached. This guy had been chosen to be overseer/caretaker/something ... kinda like an undergod ... of Europe. Why Europe? I dunno. The thing was, if he took the job, he could no longer live "on earth" and was given a lovely 2-story house.
The stairs were orange shag carpet. Not as nasty as it sounds. The whole house was done in earth tones, it was actually pretty nice, just very simple and spare. He packed a couple suitcases and asked if his wife could come, because he'd be very lonely without her. They moved into this house. There was a lift on the stairs, but now that they weren't "of earth" anymore, it was very difficult to get their suitcases to stay on the lift. They'd basically fall through, as if one or the other item was merely phantom. Their host (who was showing them into the house, and then would butt out) tried to tell them this, but they couldn't quite fathom it until it happened. If they -held- their suitcases, they would mostly survive the trip, but the zippers kept coming undone and some things would fall out. They did get their things upstairs, though, and started making themselves at home. They couldn't get used to the idea that they didn't have to eat, so they also did some grocery shopping. Same problem with the paper bags of groceries. They broke all over the hallway, and there were produce, tubs of butter, little jugs of milk, etc, all over the place. I specifically remember bananas and acorn squash. Heehee. They realized they may have gotten a little carried away and pondered selling some of their extra food, but thought it might be unfair to sell milk with a "sell by" date of "eternity" They actually had that conversation.
By this point, I fully inhabited the characters in my dream. I was still mostly the man, but was sometimes the wife. She was tall, willowy, beautiful with long, long, dark hair. He was still totally madly in love with her, after 20 years of marriage, and would just gaze at her sometimes, thinking how lucky he is. (Kinda like that song Wonderful Tonight.) After a couple years in this house, getting comfortable in their situation and with their job (which I never actually witnessed, just their downtime together) they started learning their little special powers. Mild magic. They were both sitting on a bench at the top of the stairs, when someone who looked like the wife came up the stairs, except that she was about 10 years younger-looking and her hair was even longer and fuller. The husband looked surprised, but immediately realized that it was really just his wife experimenting with her looks. No matter that her "real" body was sitting next to him on the bench. Next up the stairs was a Liz Taylor lookalike. Then various dark-haired beauties, most of them recognizable as entertainment stars. Suddenly there was a bright blonde who really stood out from the previous ones. She was a Vulcan. (I dunno, it was my dream, but I can not explain it.) The variety got a little more expansive now.
There were redheads, there were people who weren't necessarily considered beauties, but were valued for their brains or some other ability. There was even Edith Bunker from All in the Family ("Oh Archie") but with dark, dark hair. Somewhere in here, I became one of the experiments. They were all walking one by one up the steps, through the bedroom, and into the dressing room. I stood in this little room with all these women, and they contained their own personalities. I talked to Edith Bunker who told me about her life. She told me that in real life she had three children, and only one was a "no name baby" ... I asked her what the heck that meant. She said, "That's a baby whose name isn't all set up before they're ever made." So 2 of her babies were named after someone in the family, but that 3rd wasn't. That's what she meant by "no name" ... She had that same voice she had in All in the Family, but she was a lot more self-assured.
More time passed, and they had learned they could even invite friends for dinner parties, and had really made this life their own. It was a strange situation to have the friends over, though, because the couple wasn't really alive and "of earth" but these people were still "of earth" they just weren't "on earth" when they came to the parties. I think they came for the company and atmosphere, not the food, because I don't think the food could stick with them.
At one of these dinner parties, they learned that their term was up. It was time to pass the house on to the next undergod. The guests turned it into a "goodbye house" party, and the couple started cleaning up the house so it would be pristine for the next people. What with the parties, there were personal items all over, even childrens' toys in the garden. The wife (who now looked like my mother) was down on her hands and knees making sure that there were no tiny cars hiding under the bushes, no little dolls among the flowers. I, a dinner guest, started helping. I asked why it was so important to her to get every single thing cleaned up. She said that when they moved in the house had no personality. It was warm and welcoming, but had no indication anyone had ever lived there. She wanted to leave it the same as she found it, warm, welcoming, but personality-less. Let the next people make it home and forget that anyone else had ever even been there. I helped her put all their personal items (not much, mostly things that belonged to others but had been left behind) into their big red SUV (*laugh* guess it really was my mother?) and tidy the house for the last time.
Is that strange or what? I really liked that house, too, lemmetellya. Kinda neutral natural harvest colors with a lot of white and cream. Not my normal style, but wow. It was so nice. | | | Posted 9/30/2002 10:22 AM - 1 view - 1 comments
