| | Across our nation, the institution of marriage is under attack - Rep. Jim Ryun, KS 2nd District (and many others....)
"Being pro-life, I am probably going to vote for it" [A proposal to ban gay marriage in the state of Kansas, although Kansas law already defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.] Rep. Bob Grant D-Cherokee, KS
WHAT???? I sat here, closed my eyes and tried very hard to come up with a connection between abortion and homosexuality. Nope, can't do it. By definition very few homosexuals would ever seek an abortion. They're incredibly unlikely to get pregnant. Incredibly. Bob Grant admits in the article that it's a freaking nonissue. He says "...every election year this damn thing comes up. It's either this, or abortion or something like that. We use these as political footballs to try and get people to vote the wrong way or whatever." "We've got too many footballs in the game as it is."
An article on the same page has quotes from local residents saying it's against the bible, etc. Are we in church here or are we running a state and a country? Where do you draw the line on biblical law? I don't want to live in a country which approaches the Taliban's type of extremism. I'm not going to cover my hair or always defer to my husband's judgment. I don't need to be married to be worth anything. I may even take the lord's name in vain, for god's sake. Uh-oh. I'm going to hell maybe. But my government is NOT the one to decide that. I even wear pants and have eaten pork. *gasp*
My government is in charge of granting legal rights. Power of attorney, inheritance, spousal privilege in court, adoption of my partner's last name ... these are things my government is in charge of granting. My government is in charge of passing laws for the public good. I don't see how gay marriage will weaken my own marriage. I don't see how allowing a man who's lived with a man for 10 years to visit in the hospital will harm anyone. My husband will inherit my stuff (my debt, more like it) but a pair of women who've lived together for 30 years better be very careful in the wording of wills and property titles, because the survivor may find herself out on her ass with no rights. How does protecting his right to assist his life-partner in the hospital or protecting her right to live in her own house hurt me? How? My marriage is totally separate from their relationships. My marriage is not defined by how my married neighbors act. [Thank my lucky stars.] My marriage is not damaged by the couple down the street not bothering to marry, even though they have kids together. My marriage is not going to be threatened if the guys across the alley suddenly get the chance to make their union legal. Someone please tell me how gay marriage (or unions or whatever) threatens my own marriage. I can't come up with one way. If it's against your religious definition of marriage, that's your problem. Your church can refuse to perform such ceremonies. You can refuse to attend. If you can come up with a way it -legally- and -realistically- damages my own right to be married to my husband and share property and responsibilities, please tell me. |
