McCain, Giuliani and Taxes
Every year since 1986, Americans for Tax Reform has circulated a pledge among Republicans that they would not be involved in raising taxes. The pledge has been signed by every presidential nominee of the party since 1988. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, both front runners for the Republican nomination, have yet to sign the pledge. McCain opposed the President's 1.35 trillion dollar across-the-board cuts in 2001. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), and former Virginia Governor James Gilmore have already signed the pledge. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) are the only other contenders who have not signed the pledge.
