  • France Shifts Right

Nicolas SarkozyWith most of the votes counted, conservative Nicolas Sarkozy captured the French presidency with a more than seven percentage point margin of victory over socialist Segolene Royal.  Sarkozy replaces outgoing President Jacques Chirac.  Conservatives around the world have hailed this outcome.  Sarkozy ran on a platform of various market reforms to help stimulate the French economy.  Among the reforms are plans to reduce the income tax from 60 to 50 percent and easing restrictions on the 35-hour work week.

In addition, the President-elect hopes to strengthen ties with the United States.

Isn't this wonderful, first Germany and now France.  Let's just hope the Republicans win the presidency in '08.

Unfortunately, what Europe would calls conservative is not the same as what Americans would call conservatives. Our family has hosted two exchange students from Europe. One of them told us that the conservatives there are like our liberals and the liberals there are unabashed communists.
