  • GOP Round 3

In a relatively slow news day, most of the political articles center on last night's GOP debate hosted by CNN.  This comes on the heels of the Democratic debate just two days earlier.  The debate largely centered on the immigration plan currently being negotiated between Congress and the White House, among other issues.  The candidates also took the opportunity to frequently bash President Bush.

Like previous debates, the general consensus is that nobody really won, but Romney was the most polished with his crisp answers, Giuliani held his own despite answering some difficult questions, and McCain showed signs of life, but not nearly enough.

Interestingly, for the third straight debate pundits are hailing the success of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.  Many are starting to think that he's positition himself as a potential VP ticket.  He has seemingly distanced himself (positively) from the other second tier candidates.  As one pundit points out, he would not overshadow the top of the ticket, but he's smooth enough to hold his own as VP.  Despite a strong showing at the debate, Huckabee later complained to CNN about the format.

Finally, it appears that the University of Miami is pushing to hold the first ever debate in Spanish this September.  The debate would feature translators for the candidates who need them, which would be most.  Only Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) speak fluent Spanish.

Here's a funny clip below from last night's debate featuring Giuliani and lightning:
