Giuliani vs. Social Conservatives
Social conservative leaders are ratcheting up their resistance to former NYC Mayor Giuliani. About a month ago, Focus on the Family head James Dobson said that he would never vote for Giuliani. Joining Dobson's resistance to Giuliani in recent weeks is Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, Louis Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition, and Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Covention. Each expressed displeasure at Giuliani's social stances, although not all went as far as Dobson to say he would vote third party instead of voting for Giuliani. It's the question that seemingly haunts many social conservatives, "What if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination?" Can social conservatives hold their noses long enough to vote for him? Can social conservatives risk allowing a Clinton, Obama, or Edwards to win the White House if they vote third party instead? What about abstaining from the voting process altogether in 2008? The questions are legitimate for social conservatives, and there may be no easy answer.
