Arnold: Say Adios to Spanish T.V.
When asked how latino students could improve academically at a meeting of Hispanic journalists, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) responded simply, "You've got to turn off the Spanish television set." The Governor, who said he knew he would get in trouble for saying such things, said that Spanish media is one thing that is hindering immigrants from learning English and assimilating into the culture. He referenced that when he came to the United States he rarely spoke German and was forced to learn English. The Governor's comments shocked many of the journalists there. They countered by saying that it is the Spanish media that keeps immigrants informed and helps them "function in society."
