  • Louisiana First State to Ban Late-term Abortions

Louisiana Louisiana became the first state to enact a partial birth abortion ban.  The legislation, which mirrors the 2003 federal ban and was upheld by the Supreme Court, would make it a crime to perform the procedure except when the life of the mother is in danger.  Fines for doctors violating the laws would be between $1,000 and $10,000 and jail penalties would be between one and ten years.  While there are roughly 1.25 million abortions performed each year, only a few thousand result in partial birth abortion.  The majority of abortions are performed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
