2008 $$$ and Update
When running for President, having money never hurts. With the second quarter numbers in, it's easier to say whose campaign is gaining traction and whose is floundering. Let's start on the Democratic side. As of right now, Hillary Clinton has $45 million dollars on hand, having raised $27 million in the second quarter. Similarly, Barack Obama has $36 million in the bank, having raised $33 million. Obama and Clinton alone have raised more than $30 million more than all of the Republican candidates combined (the figure does not include Fred Thompson's fundraising since he has not officially declared). John Edwards, who is falling off the pace a little, raised $9 million, with $13 million in the bank. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson raised $7 million in the first quarter, suggesting that his candidacy is gaining some traction. Richardson continues to distance himself from the rest of the second tier. Chris Dodd raised $3.25 million, Joe Biden $2.3 million, and Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel less than $1 million.
On the Republican side, Rudy Giuliani leads the way having raised nearly $18 million. He has the same amount in the bank. John McCain raised $11 million, but as reported last week, he has spent nearly all of it. Mitt Romney is in a similar spending crisis, having raised $14 million in the second quarter, but reporting just $11 million left, $9 million of which is Romney's own money. As mentioned, Fred Thompson's numbers aren't available due to his non-official candidate status. Among second tier hopefuls, Ron Paul surpisingly led the way with $2.4 million, Tom Tancredo raised $1.7 million, Sam Brownback raised $1.4 million, and Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, Tommy Thompson and Jim Gilmore all raised less than $1 million.
In other P2008 news...
- Obama calls for permenant assault weapons ban
- Republican Gilmore quits presidential race
- Huckabee needs to finish 3rd or better in Ames, or he says he's done (Side note: Mitt Romney is expected to win the Iowa Straw poll next month. McCain, Giuliani, and F. Thompson have all said they're not participating. That means Huckabee will have to go up against the likes of Brownback, Paul, Tancredo, Hunter, and T. Thompson)
