  • Iowa Straw Poll Preview

Romney2 As one article aptly put, the Ames, Iowa informal straw poll is not a king-maker; it's a peasant-maker.  Tommorrow marks the first GOP straw poll since 1999.  Traditionally, the event is viewed as an opportunity for campaigns to demonstrate their organizational strength.

This year's straw poll may be unique.  Mitt Romney is largely expected to place first because neither Rudy Giuliani, nor John McCain, nor Fred Thompson have elected to participate.  This places Romney against, largely, dark horse and second tier candidates.  Some candidates have said that if they do not take a certain place or better, they will drop out.  Tommy Thompson has said he needs to place second or better, which he is unlikely to do.  Mike Huckabee says that he will need to place third or better, which is far more likely.

Second tier candidates such as Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, and Tom Tancredo have said they will continue regardless of the outcome.

With that being said, here are my predictions guaranteed to go wrong.

    1.  Mitt Romney

    2.  Sam Brownback

    3.  Mike Huckabee

    4.  Ron Paul

    5.  Tommy Thompson

    6.  Duncan Hunter

    7.  Tom Tancredo

    8.  John Cox
