  • Fred Announces, Steals Debate Thunder

"It's a lot more difficult to get on the Tonight Show than it is to get into a presidential debate," said former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) shortly after announcing his intention to run for President of the United States.  Thompson has been criticized this week for not participating in the Republican debate.  Instead, Thompson showed a 30 second ad, and spent the day in in Los Angeles preparing for his announcement on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  In addition, shortly after midnight, Thompson released a 13 minute video on his website (www.fred08.com) detailing who he is and why he is running for President.  One pundit called it a "theatrical success."

Here is a clip from his announcement:

Thompson's announcement largely upstaged the GOP presidential debate held yesterday in New Hampshire.  The debate largely centered on Thompson's late entry to the '08 campaign and allowed candidates to collectively take their first jabs.  The debate also centered on the Iraq war and the successes of "the surge."  The consensus winner (at least according to the media) was John McCain, who has done a lot of retooling in recent weeks after financial woes and a staff shake-up.

Here are some of the candidate's responses to the Thompson candidacy.
