  • 2008 Election Outlook: District of Columbia

This article is part of an ongoing series previewing the 2008 elections in each of the 50 states.  We will be progressing through the states alphabetically by state postal abbreviation.

State: District of Columbia (Federal district)

    Electoral Votes: 3

    Federal Races

President:  Republican presidential candidates have never won in D.C., period.  There are no more sure electoral votes for the Democratic nominee than these three.

Congress: Washington D.C. elects a delegate that does not have a vote, at least not yet.  A stalled bill in Congress would allow Territorial Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton to vote in the U.S. House in exchange for adding another seat (and therefore, another electoral vote) in Utah, a traditional GOP stronghold.  The bill had more momentum than previous years, but will probably die before the session is up.  Norton has the seat as long as she wishes.
