2008 Election Outlook: Delaware
This article is part of an ongoing series previewing the 2008 elections in each of the 50 states. We will be progressing through the states alphabetically by state postal abbreviation.
State: Delaware
Electoral Votes: 3
Federal Races
President: Democrats have won Delaware in the last four election cycles. Bill Clinton won in 1992 and 1996 with 43% and 51%, respectively. Al Gore took the state with 54% in 2000 and John Kerry won in 2004 with 53%. The Democratic nominee should have no difficulty holding this state.
CD-ALL: Longtime Rep. Mike Castle (R) is a fairly safe bet to win re-election in this Democratic leaning state. He does not face significant opposition from any of the Democratic candidates.
I rate this seat as Likely Republican
State Races
Governor: Current Gov. Ruth Minner is term-limited and cannot run for re-election. On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. John Carney and state Treasurer Jack Markell are battling for the nomination. Popular drugstore owner Alan Levin is being drafted to run on the Republican side. A race between Levin and either Democratic opponent would be interesting, but the Democrat would have the advantage.
I rate this race as Likely Democrat
Other Statewide Races: The only other statewide race is the Insurance Commissioner’s race. Matthew Denn (D) should cruise to re-election.
State Legislature:
Republicans maintain a 22-19 majority in the Delaware House, which is not surprising considering much of the state is rural, with the exception of the area near Philadelphia. Democrats maintain a 13-8 majority in the Senate.
