Now the presumptive republican party candidate for President, McCain is busy developing a strategy for the general election. His "maverick" image has appeal to many independent voters (a growing faction in many states). A "
Politico.com" headline reads
"McCain wants to paint Blue states Red." To accomplish this, McCain strategists are looking at states where the race was close but lost by Bush in the 2000, and 2004 elections, and hoping to target independent and undecided voters to sway those Electoral College votes toward the Republican ticket.
Even though there seems to be a decline in Republican voters overall, strategists feel McCain can pull the moderates and independents in to compensate for a lack of unified and energized support from the traditional republican base.
