| | At tonight's meeting I'm going to bring up the discussion that our Hartford Group needs a GSR.
If asked, would I do the GSR job? Serving the fellowship is a noble undertaking. Service is a job that receives almost zero acknowledgement or recognition, yet it is very important to the fellowship. Service makes twelfth step work possible and more efficient. Most AA’s know virtually nothing about the service organizations and would prefer not to hear it. However, as a Bachelor of Philosophy and a drunk, I find service in moderation fun. I like to talk about ideas, principals, traditions, concepts, service and philosophy. I like helping drunks, AA members and groups. I like passing on the legacy of service to others.
On the other hand, I have done several terms of service in the past. I eventually found the meetings boring and somewhat annoying, not to mention the time consuming and expensive. I also felt guilty about the sacrifice my family made. With that in mind I can say for certain that the adventure would quickly fade, the burden would dull my enthusiasm, and I would wish I hadn’t gotten involved. This is also one of those junctures where I could make a decision to say no, and not drive myself crazy with over-commitment.
Others should serve first. An eager servant would be better than a reluctant one. Failing others stepping up to serve, the question becomes, should I? Lord, Thy Will, not mine, be done. |
