I WAS AWAKENED EARLY THIS MORNING, WITH A PHONE CALL

One of  the last two, of my Mother’s only first cousins had passed away, this morning at 1:00 A.M.    He’d been in the hospital for a couple of weeks, and they had returned him to the nursing home.  He’s been struggling for several weeks now.

Vernon was our walking encyclopedia of family history.  If we needed to know anything, a person’s name, or a date, or a place,  he knew and REMEMBERED!!!  I went to see him in the hospital about two weeks ago, and even though it was hard for him to speak, he was still just bursting with family information he wanted to share.   He LOVED to reminisce.  About a year ago, wanting to get all the information, I could, for the family tree, I went to visit him and took with me, a good tape recorder, and some empty cassette tapes.  He loved reminiscing about the family, especially the folks that I’m too young, at 72, to remember, and I came home with three hours of tape recorded  VERNON MEMORIES.

His mother died when he was a very young child.  After that, for a time, he and two of his brothers spent several months in an orphanage, because his father could not work and care for the children at the same time.  Later on, his mother’s brothers and sisters (my grandmother being one of them) rallied around and after getting the boys out of the orphanage, those families all helped raise them.

He and both his brothers served in WW II at the same time.

About a year ago, at the Allen Family Reunion, we took a vote as to whether or not, to have the reunion every year, or every SECOND year.  Vernon spoke up and said, “Well, I’d like to see us have it EVERY year, and I think you all know why.”   Well, today was Vernon’s “why”.

I’m sure he’s in God’s house now.  He knew him well, and they were VERY good friends.

I crawled out of bed, and went to the freezer in the basement for some beef to make beef and noodles.  I had it done, and up there, by 11:30 for their lunch.  I visited a bit, and came back home.

This afternoon, I’ve worked very hard at holding down the couch.  It’s so hot outside, that I have NO DESIRE to go back out.   I’ll be glad when this heat wave breaks.

Isn't it a blessing he was a saved Christian!   Pray for our a/c.  It is jury rigged to try to get it through the night until our a/c friend can get here tomorrow and hopefully fix whatever is wrong.  Just hope if it needs parts we can get them around here somewhere.  I think we had about 115 heat index today.  Guess if push came to shove we could go out and sleep in the car!  We do have friends that would take us in if it breaks all the way down.  I just worry about the computer getting too hot too.

Not my own homemade one, I found the recipe, here it is:    Over Medium heat you cook 1 and a half pounds of ground beef with 1/2 cup each of chopped carrot, celery and onion.  Once the meat is done and vegetables tender then you drain it.  Then you add 7 cups of water, one packet of au jus mix, 2 tablespoons of beef boullion granules, 1/8 teaspoon pepper and 2 bayleaves.  Bring it to a boil and throw in a cup and a half of egg noodles.  Boil that all for 15 minutes.  Remove bay leaves before serving.    EASY EASY EASY and delicious too!  :)

How wonderful that you were able to capture his memories on tape!  That is a rare treasure.  It seems that he lived a good and full life... It does make it easier to know that someday you will see those you love again and then never have the sorrow of saying "Good by"

Beef and noodles are my favorite!  What time are you serving?

Will you come get me?  Wil isn't going to let me go that far........to expensive with gas this high......however, that said, it is never too high for him to go to breakfast with the guys or whatever.  We even took a ride around the roads the other night just because he wanted to.  MEN!!!  lol

I don't do Beef and Noodles but did keep the recipe.  Always looking for something easy and different.

Hi Granny,

Sorry to hear about your mom's cousin. The good thing, like you said, is he is with Jesus now! He will make a good historian up there too!! :)

Not many people around now that are family historians. The Native Americans had that as a big part of their culture.

That will be one big celebration up there and I am sure he will have lots to tell you when you get to see him up there!

Keep cool and take it easy.

My Aunt thats in the rest home was our family historian. I tried to get as much of our history as I could from her but her memory is getting bad now and I cant get much more. I try taking old pictures out there to see if she can tell me who they are--Almost makes me cry--old pictures with no names--we will never know who they are.

I have the details on my xanga but when I went to check on him after mowing the front and back yards around 3:15, he was in the flower pot but some bird or something had killed him. I think he was pecked to death because his little head was all bloody and he was lying on his tummy in the flower pot.

I have pictures that I had taken at 11 am that morning to get better pictures of him in the flower pot. I am glad I did.

You will have to visit my Tuesday entry and scroll down, as it was a pretty long one with Elita, etc.I will miss him.

I'm sorry to hear about your cousin.  It was my aunt Josie who was our historian.  She died way back in the 80's before family history meant something really important to me.  I can remember feeling so bored with her stories when I was a kid and just wanted to play and have fun.  I'm so glad you got those memories on tape!
Regarding Seattle Sutton Healthy Eating -- they're based in Ottawa IL -- and are mostly in the Midwest.  My neighbor started the program in the spring, as did her daughter.  For a single person it works out great, but if you go out to eat most of the time, it would not be practical.  I guess you could do the breakfast and lunches, freeze the dinners and have 7 people over every Sunday night for pot luck!!!!
Stay cool, or try to, anyway!

Hugs,
Patrice

I have power -- got home to a cool house.  Scottie and I really appreciate the offer of one of your bedrooms!  Same goes here, girl, if you ever need it.  Hope your week is going well, and you're staying cool.  Thank goodness it finally cooled off here.

RYC:  No I haven't heard of Kitty Litter Cake.  My oldest G-son was a little guy when dirt cakes came into fashion.  Had one at a family reunion when he was 2 or 3.  When they pulled the "worms" out he almost got sick!  lol

How the heck are you?  Haven't seen a post from you forever it seems.  Molnday is along time not to have something boring or not to post about. All I do is moan and groan about the a/c.
