POOR DUMB LITTLE HUMMINGBIRDS!!

I don't DARE leave my big double garage door up.  For some reason....maybe because there's lots of stuff stored in there, that's red in color....they fly IN the door, but can't figure out how to get OUT!!!  They fly and scoot all around the ceiling of the garage, and can't seem to figure out, that all they have to do is fly LOWER, and they can get out.   It happened again last night.

About a year ago, one flew around in there non-stop for over an hour.  We couldn't figure out how to get him out, and HE couldn't figure out how to fly out a door opening, large enough for 2 cars!!!   Finally collapsed to the floor.  Dale picked him up, took him out and put his bill in the feeder.  He then sat on the perch just a few moments, then was able to fly away.

I've learned to hurry and fix a feeder full of RED sugar-water mix, so to attract his attention, put it in a feeder and hang it LOW in the doorway, so they'll land on it, then fly on out of the garage.  Why can't they figure out, on their own,  how to get out that big opening?   BEATS ME!!!

Last weekend was fun.  Sandy came over from Mo., on Friday morning, and stayed till early Monday morning.  She had to be at work, in Columbia, at 11 A.M., so she left about 7.   During the time she was here, two of the towns close by, had all-town-garage-sales.   We went to several of those.  I bought toys and a stroller for the g-grand-baby.  Got one of those better Graco strollers, in perfect condition, for FIVE DOLLARS!!!   Couldn't believe anyone would sell it for that!!!

Sunday morning, we went to church.  Her mother is buried in a town about 35 miles from here.  She brought flowers from Mo., to put on her mother's grave.  On the way to church, which is in that direction, she said,  "OH, I FORGOT TO BRING THE FLOWERS!!"  We went out to eat with the regular bunch, then back home to pick up the flowers, then back to the cemetery, and on over to visit with her sister and brother-in-law.

SouthForkCheerMom called on the cell phone, while we were there, to say she needed some anti-biotic picked up at the drug store on the way home, so we were home by 6:30.  SFCM is headed for the dentist this morning.

Speaking of SouthForkCheerMom, she came down and mowed the pond-shed area for me again Monday.  Looks so pretty back there!!!   The yard is beginning to need it, but I'm waiting on the new grass areas to get a little more established.  We've had just enough rain in the past 10 days, that it's really looking good.  The contractor's putting in a new cistern pump, this morning, so if it dries out, I'll be able to water it, without worrying about my well going dry.

Enough rambling... need to get busy.   Contractors will be here soon.

I wonder what is the deal with those hummingbirds.  I am fascinated with the little creatures -- I even have my bathroom decorated with hummingbirds.  But I have not tried to set up a feeder yet.  Maybe I will do that this year.  Do you buy the "nectar" they sell in the store, or make your own?

I like the way you called the hummingbird a "HE"....as we all know, men get lost easy & don't dare ask for directions..LOL....kinda like that hummingbird....HE couldn't find HIS way out of that garage.....My mom had on a red shirt while she was out watering & kept feeling something buzz her head.....It was a hummingbird....LOL..I guess it saw her red shirt....

Re: the above post: hahaha... that's so funny!  Men don't know how to ask for directions.  "We are going the sceninc route" Ever heard that one! <G>

Anyway, thanks GrannyHummingbird for the advice on hummingbird feeders.  I think come payday I will go get a feeder!  :)

As usual you are busy busy busy. We are too at the moment with the barn going and suppose to have the handiman in the kitchen today but didn't happen. SIGH! Know he had a good reason. Just want to get it done.

Wil is going for a haircut after lunch but don't know if I'll ride over with him or not. Bestest friend cuts his hair....what there is left of it....too.

I guess hummingbirds are just bird brains....not too smart.  We probably won't see them for another couple of weeks.  We are just thinking about getting the feeders out.

You always have something exciting going on!

Wish I could get hummingbirds here.  I see them occasionally in the flowers, but they have never come to a feeder.  My neighbor never had any luck with hers, either.

Our feeders are full of hummingbirds and we put out an Oriole feeder this year and we have lots of Orioles this year. Between the both kinds of feeders and the finch food.  We are going broke feeding the bloomin birds. But it sure is nice seeing those beauitful birds in the yard.  My mom had her stove hit by lightening twice.  Had to get a new stove both times.  We were lucky no major damage.  enjoy the birds!!!!!! I don't think it is only hummingbirds.  We have had other birds in our garage with the big door open, and they don't seem to be able to find their way out, either.  Ken keeps the garage open all day when the weather is nice.  The birds seem to get up in the loft, and until Ken climbs up there and scares them out, they won't find their way out the door.   Same with the squirrels.

I gave up on hummingbirds.  The ants and bees/yellowjackets seemed to like the feeders more than the birds did.

I have never seen the hummies do that garage thing.  I tell you though, they aren't too dumb cause when their feeder gets empty, they buzz up to my windows and just hover there looking inside.  They only do that when they need more food.  They are fun to watch.  I have quite a few little yellow finches this year that come for the thistle seed I put out.  The red finches want sunflower seeds.  Like one of your other commenters, I am spending too much on bird stuff.  On the other hand, it's still cheaper than a movie and very "G" rated entertainment.

I have got to get out garage sale hoppin', now that is fun.

My goodness you had a fun, busy weekend...it sounds wonderful!!! And I am relieved that your hummingbird survived the garage experience....we had a less successful experience with a sparrow in the church. He ( notice it is a HE....lol) got locked in and managed to set off the motion alarm about half a dozen times ( sending various people up to the church to make sure we werent being robbed). I guess no one ever realized it was a bird causing the problem until they discovered his poor little body down in the basement on Sunday morning. I didnt ask if we gave the poor little baby a proper funeral or not. As to the hummingbirds...I am jealous, I put a feeder out last year but gave up after a month or so of changing the nectar every 3 days and only attracting ants and bees. Our pastors wife says to go for the home made variety this year...I think she said 2 cups of water and 1/2 cup sugar...boiled...is that right??? Do I add red food coloring or does the red on the feeder do enough to attract them??? Have another great weekend!!

I love to watch hummingbirds feeding but never have been able to attract them to my yard... just wasps and bees come to the feeder.. I don't have many flowers that would attract them.. maybe this year I need to plant something that will in the future.

We have a pair of doves that sit on the electric wire that goes across our back yard and drive Duke nuts.. he thinks he should try to scare them away.  They ignore him.

Hummingbirds are really interesting. It seems like I might have mentioned this to you before, but I'm always amazed at how MEAN they can be. Every year at my parent's house there is always one bully out of the bunch and he will run all the others away until he's had his fill of the water. I love to watch them...they are so graceful flitting around like they do.
