  • OK, person (it's a running joke, as you may have noticed, for me to refer to my audience in the singular), I'm going to break my original set of standards for this site to talk a little more about my everyday humdrum life. I figure you all deserve a little more light-hearted posting, because I had 3 serious posts in a row. Here you go.

    * So I went to the dentist the other day, and I had a terrible dilemma. Maybe you all can help me out. Where do you look when the dentist/dental assistant works on your teeth? If you look at the dentist, I think it's sort of weird. I know I would feel self-conscious if someone was staring at my chin or nose the whole time I was working on their teeth. But maybe they're used to it.

On the other hand, if you look away from them (say, at the light), it seems like you're going out of your way to avoid looking at them. You could just close your eyes the whole time, but then it's REALLY weird--you can't see anything, and the picking at your teeth gets to be the only sensation you have. What do you advise?

    *    I am really ticked off by women's professional sports lately. I have a soft spot for women's sports because the ladies really seem to be passionate about the game itself and about their teammates. I don't pick up the "I want to be on Sportscenter" vibes I do from watching most men's sports. But it seems like more and more pro female athletes are becoming just as image/money/attention-hungry as their male counterparts. Sheesh, ladies, you don't have to try to be models/endorsers/blah-blah-blah as well; I'm pleased as punch if you just play your game as well as you can. I guess I'll just watch more high school/college sports instead.

    * So I played this very tall guy (6'4" or something) 1-1 basketball and lost 16-11. He was winning 8-0 at one point, so I'm not too disappointed. I'm just mad because when I put the ball through his legs, I blew the open lay-up! ha. I usually push the ball too hard, but this time I did it just right, but couldn't convert. He got his, though--he dunked home the last point!

    *    I saw a baby skunk today from my apartment window! I was so excited. It was mostly fur and very little body and ran very clumsily. It was being chased by an equally-young looking gray cat. But I yelled at the cat to stop from my window, and the cat got scared and ran up a tree in the other direction. Too funny. Hey, I liked the cat too--it should stick to mice and avoid skunks for its own health.

So then I went down to meet my brother, and the same cat was walking by. I felt a little mean, so I clucked at it with my mouth. So it immediately runs over to me and demands to be petted! It had really yellow eyes and kept looking at me. Very smart cat! The funny part was, while I was petting the cat and letting it bite my fingers, SOL, I got this feeling I was being watched . I turn around, and this fat tabby cat is looking me and the little cat with a distinctly disapproving stare! I definitely got a "baby bear/momma bear" impression from her! But she ran off soon after.

So then my brother shows up, and the cat immediately leaves me and goes to him to get petted! A fine thing! After all I did for it! SOL Anyway, the cat made our day--it's not often one meets a playful, friendly strange cat. Most of them are wary, but this cat definitely liked people.

  • I try to be nice and witty to the hygeinist before she starts so she'll feel empathy for my bleeding gums and not be as klutzy with the sharp instruments.  Then when she starts I politely fall asleep.

Yeah, that cat was a player.  She stared right into our eyes too, no wonder Pope Pious XIV ordered them all killed.  It probably smelled the baby bunny scent on my hands.  You know what John?  People have to read the complete posts of The Entity to achieve closure from our silly adventures.

  • Ok, the dentist.  That's an easy one.  Your brother is right, the charm thing does wonders.  If you waltz in there seeming like you are genuinely interested in having a worthwhile conversation with a complete stranger, you tend to score major points.  From there on out...doesn't matter what you do really.  Because, how many ppl a day do they work on?  Do you actually think she's paying any attention to where your eyes are?  Probably not.  And, I'm gonna vote for falling asleep too.  After all, it's as boring as a bad lecturer and the light is so bright right in your face.  So, closing your eyes is not weird, it is just an attempt to sheild the poor things from the barbaric custom of having that stinking headlight aimed at them.  You'll learn to get over the mix of the pickage while sleepage.  Yes, I have a strong position on the subject as it is one I have considered on a number of occassions.  Heck, don't tell anyone but, I even got brave enough last time and watched the lady the entire time.  *shhh!*  She never noticed.
  • ha ha, i have also struggled with the detist look, but i usually just shut my eyes until my mouth start to close and i hear, "Can u open a little wider"
  • Ask for a little mirror... You get to see what they're doing, which is pretty cool on it's own, but they seem to be a little mroe careful when they know you're watching them...  Dentists that wear glasses are great cuz you can see the reflection in the lenses.

  • Hey, dronedot2, in my defense, it was a new dentist's assistant, and she seemed like the type who WOULD get nervous if I looked at her.  I'm not as thoughtful as you, so I had never thought of it until then (and I had visited orthodontists for years). But I commend you on your bravery, SOL--if my life is ever in danger, I know who to call!

Also, veganpiranha, excellent point on the glasses, SOL, and electronjoy, why am I not surprised? You're so easy-going, I'm surprised you don't actually fall asleep or start drooling in the chair   Ninjitsuknifer, don't tell them our plan! Mwah-ha-ha, soon they will have to read all three pages to achieve any knowledge of the true behavior of the Entity! (play silly yet scary movie music here).
