I Hate America

I want to get deeper into compatibilism and morality, but I found this so repugnant I had to post it.

I hate America

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/25/oppenheim.cabbies/index.html

Whatever happened to the First Amendment? Whatever happened to the Fourteenth Amendment? Whatever happened to the application of the First Amendment through the Fourteenth Amendment?

yes, it is sad those 14% think the cab driver should be able to refuse service based on religion.

See this is exactly why most people shouldn't vote.

How can you say with a straight face that the government can force a muslim to violate his religion? Where's the compelling state interest?

Ah now it's even worse...12% to 88%, with a 68,000+ difference.

Why? This country wasn't founded on the right to ride taxis.

See, if it was their OWN taxi (that they owned) / company, I'd say they can pick whoever they want to serve. But, they work for a company - which changes things. I work for a company and not myself, so if I have to deal with a customer I don't have the option of saying "I don't like your *fill in the blank*, I won't help you". If I did, I would lose my job and rightfully so. The person who owns a company can discriminate against whoever they feel like because it's their company. Employee's of a company cannot discriminate over who they will work with, unless they want to lose their job.

Of course I support the legal right of the employer to fire for any and every reason, including religion and the practice thereof. My problem is when the government, not the company, intervenes.

And where is it mentioned that the government is doing anything? The Metropolitan Airport Commission is the one making this call.

MAC is a government agency.

Hm, I did a quick look around and didn't see anything about it being run by the government. Anywho, that's irrelevant. The point is, you do what your employer says or you find a new job (whether you quit or are fired).

But it's not the taxi cab company telling them who they have to pick up (with that I would have no problem), it's the government fining the drivers for following their religion.

"it's the government fining the drivers for following their religion."

It's irrelevant that it's the government who is the employer. It is an employer punishing an employee for not doing their job. It's that simple.

For clarification, the taxi cab drivers don't work for the government.

It doesn't matter, since a public corporation is not free to discriminate as a private corporation is.

I agree with you on this. I am ashamed at how people in this country do not respect one another's rights. If the drivers do not want to give rides to certian people it is between them and the agency they are working for. It certainly is not the public's prerogative.
