Cool things happened today. First of all, I passed the discussion leading buck to the kiddos as of Monday, having set up pairs to come up with questions for each night's reading in
Nectar in a Sieve. After the first two came in almost totally unprepared (despite exchanged e-mails over the weekend with one about what he was supposed to do), and then the next fell flat, today was exciting. The same unprepared kid almost got into it with one of my new kids over whether it was worth it for the characters to protest their pay and treatment in the tannery. They dominated, but they got the other kids excited, I think.
Also from the most recent student-led effort, came this glorious gem (on the same topic):
Student from Spanish class last semester: "It's like when Mrs. H. made us correct our homework in Spanish. She said if we studied mistakes, then we'd just keep making the same ones. If they don't try to change anything, then they'll just keep doing things wrong and never get any better!"
Makes a body feel like she taught something.
Talking of Spanish, I will need to keep trying with today's lesson in Spanish II. I had partners plan a fashion show using as many clothing vocabulary words as possible, but at first I did not succeed. So I'm planning next time to have it be a three-day rather than two-day process, probably with rehearsal. Plus I want to have a soundtrack. And I totally need a camera. I can't believe I didn't have one when RB was working it and RW held out a dollar for him. Fortunately, I think he's one that'll be taking up my offer for an extra credit re-do on Monday.
I'm glad it was just the first try though. Otherwise the pronunciation and grammar would have been enough to make a body feel like she's taught nothing.
