  • Pinkerdell

Here's another quickie. I'm in my faculty's beautiful silent library, sitting in an incredibly comfortable leather chair. This library is completely silent except for the tapping of my keys (am I tapping too loudly?) and the librarian is very scary. Very scary. He was scolding a student for bringing in a plastic bag and he ran through all the rules, including "No Handphones!" and even though I've received this lecture before when I was very very new -totally undeserved, by the way, they should just post a big list of rules up on the wall and tell new students to read it instead of scaring us the very first day- I couldn't remember if it was "No Handphones except in Silent Mode" or "No Handphones". Well, it's "No Handphones". I sat quaking a few paces away from the lecturing librarian and hoped the object in my pocket wasn't identifiable as a phone, because that's what it is.

Reminds me of when Gollum asking Smeagol about Bilbo in The Hobbit : Whatssss in hisss pocketsss...?" If the Mr. L (that's his name from now one, L for Librarian) asks me that question I'll grab my bag and RUN.

The number of updates since I came to uni has been quite small considering the ammount of things I have to blog about because I have to use the library's computer to go online. Also I've been quite busy. Never mind, Pinkerdell should be here next week.

Who's Pinkerdell, you ask. Well, it's not who, it's what. Yes, Pinkerdell is the laptop I'm getting for uni, and it's going to arrive next week. I'm sure its colour and brand are obvious to all of you...

My naming inanimate objects has nothing to do with my introversion, honest. And no cracks about how I remember the names of things but not the names of people. You there, stop smirking.

I've got class in half an hour, so I better get ready to sneak out. Wish me luck!

    TTFN,
    Jenna

  • A Rainy Day in Serdang

Today has not been a very good day. Despite having 3 lectures scheduled for today, I learnt nothing. It's very frustrating, because I've entered the uni student mode: I'm geared up to study and do assignments and really do my best this semester. Yet the best I can do now is come to the library (that's where I am) and look up the english references because 2 of my lecturers didn't come to class today and 1 more spoke very briefly about his subject.

Oh, and I miss all of you friends back home. Maybe in time I'll be closer with those in my course, and maybe in time I'll be comfortable around them. But for now it's Jenna the Loner mode turned almost all the way up. Can't help it. A cheering thought at this moment is the memory of those first few months in form 6, when I kept to my books and thought I'd never find friends in 6 Seroja. Yet here I am missing all of you 6th Formers!  The rainy days will cease soon.

I'm having to battle negative thoughts (I'm bored, I can't believe this guy!, I hate rojak language, speak 100% in one language or not at all) and count my blessings constantly. You can tell what sort of mood I'm in, can't you? I don't normally blog about these things, but you see I don't have anyone to talk to here.

I think I'll stop complaining - no prettier word for it-  and tell you about the good things.

    The Good Things

I love the library. Great facilities, lots of books (suprisingly they have C.S. Lewis's non-fictional books) and open from 7am -11pm). I come here to watch Discovery Channel and read, as well as study and go online.

My room's more spacious than I imagined. And it looks nicer too,cos I brought some decorative things from home, like a photo of Marilee, Jun Wei and I. My college (@ residents hall) is quite nice too, and from what I've seen of the other colleges I should be thankful for its location and its facilities. And it has a piano and reading room! Plus ice-cream should I really need it.

The faculty is big, nice, modern looking, and not to far from the main academic area.

The bank, book shop and bakery are easy to get to.

I've got Fridays off and a comfortable schedule.

At least I'm allowed to do my coursework in English. I feel sorry for those who want to do mass communication in Chinese (newsreading, etc) but have to do their degrees in a different language. And I'm grateful to have the references in English, and also thank God I can understand English; it'll make it easier for me to study.

And this I'm thankful for most of all: I can go home when I want to. And I have parents willing to come get me and buy me goodies for my room. And I have friends who reply my sms's when I need the company.

So I'm not in a bad place. Just in a gloomy moment.

    Wow I feel better.

    Shouting from Serdang,
    Jenna

  • A Quick Post from Uni

Gasp I have 12 minutes to write this post. That's what the timer on this library computer says. What shall I do? I shall rush. Here's a few things, off the top of my head, that I would be interested to know if I were a reader who cares about me and has never been to UPM.

    - my room is spacious, great long desk that stretches from wall to wall, 1 nice neat roommate who doesn't speak much english but we scrape by on a bit of english, mandarin and bm. love the bed because its bedspread is from home.

    - my loving loving parents supplied me with lots of biscuits & milo to keep me happy.

    - i belong to the faculty of modern language and communication. it's big, modern looking, and has a nice small library which is quite because no one uses it much. complete with lots of classics to fill my time between classes.

    - my lectures are in BM and my textbook is in BM but I shall study and do my coursework in English. (figure out how that makes me feel.)

    - my college is quite nice. there's a fountain and a kedai runcit and a great hall. all my seniors have been very nice and helpful. (Ragging? what ragging?)

    - the bus service is excellent. no walking for me!

    - the food...lacks variety, only cooked in the Malay style so lot of nasi campur nasi campur nasi campur. I've taken to making tuna sandwiches.

    - there are a few bananas I get along with in class. Other than that I keep to myself, and do that in the library. I'm fine in this department.

Whoa 6 minutes left. Okay, I'll just leave off by saying

    a) ThanK God for supplying all my needs. and

    b) I'll be back next Thursday night! I'll be back every Thursday till Sunday nights!

    TTFN and missing you all,
    Jenna

  • Week of Farewells

I spent the whole week with my form 6 friends.

Monday : went shopping with Vicki in One Utama

Tuesday: accompanied Shiat Nee to IMU.

Wednesday: spent the evening with the whole group, talking in the playground near Vicki's house then heading to the mamak. Lots of uni talk, and then we hugged Zoo Fernn, Yvonne and Huey Chyi goodbye. After that Shiat Nee, Gervanne, Kuhanesh and I went to Vicki's house and ate ice-creams while Kung Fu Panda was playing.

Thursday: Victor brought Vicki and I to the bank after I finished my last day at kindergarten. We had lunch in the double-story restaurant oposite Williams (yummy! fish and chips!), then bought stationary from Sri Tanjung. This is when I said the final goodbye to Vicki. (well not that final, only 5 months!) Later in the evening Jun Ai came over to my house in the evening. We watched Juno and hung out in my room.

Friday: Shiat Nee accompanied me to SOGO, then MidValley for more SHOPPING. We had a yong tau foo brunch and a Burger King lunch. Shopping was tiring! From MidValley we went straight to Gervanne's house, wrapped Nai Teng's present and showed off our purchases, then went with Jun Ai and Kuhanesh to Wong Kok, SS2  to celebrate Nai Teng's birthday. Thanks for the treat, Nai Teng. Jun Ai had to leave early, so we left and she dropped the 3 of us off at Kuhanesh' place (here I said goodbye to Jun Ai). We spent most of the time playing songs on the guitar and singing. (Shiat Nee has a nice voice and has been teaching herself to play pretty well) Then it was time to say goodbye to Shiat Nee and Kuhanesh.

Today was a tiring day of packing and last-minute shopping (that word again!) for shampoo, soap, and the kind of things you buy with your dad and not with your girl friends. There's so much stuff! It feels like I'm moving out for a very long time. Bed sheets, pillows, cups, tupperwares, toilet rolls, pails, rags...it's all just too much! Imagine lugging all that stuff up to my room.

I should go sleep now. I'll need all my energy tomorrow. *yawn*

One last thing: Tonight our youth had Sister's Night at Johann's house. The boys put a lot of effort into making the "night in Paris" enjoyable for us girls. Great service, good food, warm atmosphere (who doesn't like candlelight dinners?) and funny, entertaining performances. Well done, brothers!

That's all for now.Just think, the next blog entry will be written on campus.

    Jenna

  • Preparations for uni (at last)

       1. Medical check-up + chest x-ray
     - i took a strange pride in being pronounced to be "in good health". It was fun looking at my own x-ray; pleasing too to see such a clear perfect set of ribs. After watching House and Grey's Anatomy you get used to seeing lesions and masses on the x-rays. It came as a shock to see an x-ray of a perfectly healthy set of bones. And as for my BMI, HAH! All you people who say I'm skinny (actually it's just you NG brothers) my BMI's 18, which the doctor said was good. I told you "a Slurpee a day keeps the doctor away."

    2. Forms, forms,forms
    - thanks to my bestest buddy Jun Wei who printed out over 20 pages from the UPM website, I filled up everything I could. I'm just about done.

    3. Photos
    - UPM needs 12 passport-sized photos of me. If they had seen me before, I would understand. But they haven't, so I wonder why they need 12.

    4. Shopping!
    - This was fun. Vicki and I spent all Monday afternoon and evening shopping for formal wear. Yes, the dress code at local unis are pretty strict. Shirts, collared-Ts, pants, and proper shoes. I only own pants. All of a sudden I'm buying a whole new wardrobe. Shopping was tiring but enjoyable because (a) my parents gave me money to do it , (b) we knew specifically what we wanted and (c) we both were shopping for the same things. We would grab the same shirts in the same sizes, go into neighbouring fitting-rooms, then come out and compare. [All the while, Kuhanesh and Shamus were doing guy stuff just so we could shop : thank you guys]

    5. Telling people about it
    - finally I have the answer the the uni question. I've been updating everyone who asked me before this - and when you go to SSMC there are many - and it's such a relief to be able to stop the questions from recurring.

    6. Talking about it
    - Last Wednesday, the day the results came out, a group of us met up at Kuhanesh's house to exchange results - though news travelled fast via sms- and talk about it. Yvonne is off to Sabah, Huey Chyi to Sarawak, and Vicki to Terengganu while Gervanne, Kuhanesh and I are staying here. I'll miss you guys a LOT! After chatting over pizza and singing sad songs (notably Tears in Heaven and Leaving on a Jet Plane) we decided to watch Kung Fu Panda in One Utama. It's a cute show. Shi Fu is adorable! And Oogui was endearingly close to death. [Favourite scene - Shi Fu's roll of the eyes]

That's where I am in preparations so far.

Today I spent the afternoon accompanying Shiat Nee to IMU. She needed to drop off her application. One of the administrative staff was very helpful and brought us to see the labs and talk to one of the professors, Prof. Ong. He was nice. My sister uses a facial product he patented!

IMU is quite nice, though a bit small. The facilities look clean and new. The students were intimidating in their formal wear and labcoats...made us feel small. Jun Ai, are you intimidating now that you're a dentistry student? I should spring a visit on you when you're in class.

We bought sundaes after that and talked. Had a great time, Shiat Nee!

    Jenna
