  • "So for now, let's talk about YOU for a change. If you could be any creature, ANY creature at all, what would be? What would your powers be as this creature and what would your name be IF you were this creature?"

The above quote came from the blog of my favorite irreverent Reverend.  She asked this question of her readers, I'd send you there but she's left Xanga and started a private blog for private reasons.

    My Answer...

Hmmm...there are so many creatures I would love to 'try-on' first....faeries, aliens, elves, anything mystic or metaphysical, surely.  I think, though, that if I had to choose just one, it would be The Phoenix.

The following, for those that may be unfamiliar with this being, is what I found online at http://www.nwpamed.com/Phoenix/birdhx.htm.

"In ancient Egypt and in classical antiquity, the phoenix was a fabulous bird associated with the worship of the sun. The phoenix was said to be as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold plumage and a melodious cry. Only one phoenix existed at any one time, and it was very long-lived no ancient writer gave it a life span of less than 500 years. As its death approached, the phoenix fashioned a nest of aromatic boughs and spices, set it on fire, and was consumed in the flames. From the pyre miraculously sprang a new phoenix, which, after embalming its predecessor's ashes in an egg of myrrh, flew with the ashes to the City of the Sun, in Egypt, where it deposited them on the altar in the temple of the Egyptian god of the sun. The phoenix was understandably thus associated with immortality and the allegory of resurrection and life after death. The phoenix was compared to undying Rome, and it appears on the coinage of the late Roman Empire as a symbol of the Eternal City."

This was a powerful creature of great beauty.  Her appearance in Egypt could make or break the pharaoh's reign (I'm assigning her female status, I don't know if she was a she).  So beautiful, the site of her was an omen of good fortune; her absence showed her disfavor and told of bad things to come.

To fly, with the power she must have had, oh my...what a thrill that would be.  The bearer of her own destiny, death and resurrection.

A feathered Messiah, saving the humans from themselves at her choosing?

Yes, I think I would be The Phoenix.
