  • first elizabethWhile I was in Montreal, I read a novel called "The Last Wife of Henry VIII" by Carolly Erickson.  I chose the book because I had read another piece of fiction of hers, "The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette," and had thoroughly enjoyed it.  After finishing "The Last Wife...," I became obsessed with knowing everything I can find about the Tudors, relating to Henry VIII especially... the scoundrel that he was.  Which led me to the book I began yesterday, "The First Elizabeth."  I purchased it, thinking it was a novel.  Instead it is a biography, and I am loving it.  The paperback is a tall, fat, brick of a read, which I also love.  I am unable to slow myself down when reading, so the lengthier the book the longer I am able to immerse myself in it... like hot water in the bath not cooling so quickly. I suspect that I will be looking for more when I come to the end of this one, and so on, until I exhaust myself and then my Tudor fever will subside.  In the meantime I will probably read everything Carolly Erickson has written, so long as my budget can afford.

In this book, so far, I am most enjoying the description of daily life... child mortality... royal expectations and protocol.  So interesting to me.

Though the weather is still like summer here, that will not last much longer.  The leaves are beginning to glow with autumn.  I am trying to savor a break in the madness, like the center of a storm that is my world this time of year and through the holidays.  Much is coming up in the meantime, including a trip to visit both sets of grandparents (with a possible overnight stay at Disney in between) in Florida this November when the girls have a bunch of time off from school.  I'm currently trying to get that sorted out.

The moon has been magical these past two days.  Last night she lit up our house with her glow.  Brilliant.
Seeing her like that brings me to prayer, almost every time.
    Peaceful blessings.
    Good night.

Try ordering them ahead of when you want to read them on Amazon or something. That way you won't go broke and when I find books for really cheap on there, I regift them after I'm done by writing some short note in the front and leaving it in a public place, putting in the note to please do the same when they are done. Anyways, I'm done rambling.

It sounds like you've found some really good reads! I loved reading for fun over the summer when I had the chance and I'm hoping that I'll be able to pick up a few historical fiction novels before the school year is over, at least.

The weather is still like summer here too, it JUST cooled down into the upper 70's this morning and it's supposed to be hot again by the weekend. :[ I'm sure, though, that by the time your November trip comes around, you and Ed and the girls will thoroughly enjoy the warmer weather.

If you enjoy those books, I have something very, very important to whisper in your ear: Georgiana by Amanda Foreman. Surprisingly, one of the best books I've read in years. You can buy it used at Amazon for a penny. You'll be glad you did...

Do you buy all your books?? What about the library? Otherwise, this might be an option that you'll like. www.swimbooks.com You rent books from here like you'd rent DVDs from netflix. I've never used it because NYC has a very good library system here. Also, if you're interested...I joined this website called www.goodreads.com I find it very useful to keep track of all my books. :)
