Earth day feels like a farce to me. It creates no change, nothing is done and everything done is too late.
I laugh at myself... big deal I use recycled toilet paper and separate my trash.
I wish I could feel hopeful and I try to be.
But in the back of my head I'm preparing mentally,
for hard days in my old age.
Harder than expected, and not the least of what I/we deserve.
At least I'll be old. My children will live their lives on what remains when the earth finally says enough.
So I enjoy the tree plantings, while I use my paper towels.
I will continue to hope for the best and change my ways as I learn how.
But I believe it is too late, to preserve our earth the way we all will remember her.
And that just sucks.

Don't lose heart honey. Keep doing what you can, and know that She can take care of herself, even if that means WE get evicted.
Right.
She's (the earth) has been around a long ... long time.
Who's to say she didn't need plastic ... so she created humans? Humn? Keep the love lantern lit.
I guess Earth Day can seem kind of pointless considering it is ONE day out of 365 that could be spent taking care of our environment. My family tries to be as eco-friendly as we can, but it is discouraging when I walk my dog down the street and see that people have thrown out three cans of garbage, at least half of which could have been recycled/donated.
But I think more and more people are beginning to realize that if we don't start cleaning up after ourselves we will end up with a big problem. Almost everyone I know is painfully aware of the damage being done to the earth. I have hope. It may be too late to return to the way earth was pre-automobile, but at least most are willing to try to prevent it from getting worse, right? :]
Sorry about blogging on your blog. heh.

I know we'll only ruin her for a short while, until she's rid of us like a virus. I would so prefer a different outcome.

Sweetie... you can blog in my comments anytime.
@ToReadYou - That would be a happy side effect of global warming.
I love hot mud.

To me, Earth Day is just another day... we recycle, reuse, etc all year long.
i'm afraid you're right.
Oh Jen... its not too late, I don't think so. I think we have hope yet. There are incredible people out there doing incredible things. We have hope yet
I believe that it's never too late, there's always hope
you are probably right, but we have to keep fighting it.
Earth day is really such a city slick way of thinking. I guess it's just me. But I look outside and see...nothing. Or everything. I see no homes or trees for miles (because this is the plains and there just aren't any trees, not before white man came, nothing since like, millions of years ago). I see things just the way it was for hundreds of years (except for some fence and every now and then an electric wire). There is no smog, no pollution (except right when we crank up a tractor). Well, unless you want to count the methane gas from my horses and cattle fartin' and crappin' everywhere! LOL! What I'm trying to say is, there is untouched country everywhere, but people see what's done in the cities and think it's like that everywhere.
You know what? I think that on the east coast, and the north/New England area, and probably the west coast too, ya'll think this way because it's so darn populated. Come out west, to Texas, to New Mexico, to the Midwest like Kansas and Nebraska, and see all the NOTHING that is out here, and you may think differently. Now, I'm not saying that we shouldn't recycle or plant a tree, but I don't think it's as dire as tree-huggers might think.
BUT, I am going to go plant a few trees this year. Because even though this is the plains, I likes me some trees. Good wind breakers from the dang dust storms and tumbleweeds. I want some apples and peaches to go along with my pecan and pear trees.
Yesterday Whole Foods stopped offering plastic bags to their customers ... forever. I thought that was a pretty significant gesture for Earth Day. I turnd all the lights off for 8 hours last night
Every little bit helps, right?
